“B-Grade Material”. When I saw the title, I knew that this was an album of outakes (apparently from “Restless”). But, how often does an album of outtakes surpass one’s expectations? I remember thinking that “Dead Letter Office” from R.E.M. was outstanding.
“B-Grade Material” is excellent. You can’t beat “No Reasons” for an album opener. And, in my estimation, The Ocean Party have a unique sound. It’s really hard to pinpoint their influences. The Triffids, Prefab Sprout, and a slew of other contemporary Australian artists begin to tell the tale - but The Ocean Party do have a unique sound. I think this is due to the fact that they have so many songwriters with various side-projects: Ciggie Witch, The Removalists, Snowy Nasdaq & Snowy Life, or Cool Sounds.
The Ocean Party will be playing live on KDVS on March 25th (4 pm). They will also be playing live at Armadillo Music, in Davis, CA, on the evening of March 25th.
