Simi Sohota was a DJ at KDVS during his years at UC Davis. Like many of us (both Micah and myself included), KDVS provided an amazing opportunity to take a dive into all types of music.

Sohota left Davis, moved to San Francisco and formed Healing Potpourri which sounds like a amalgam of Christopher Cross, The High Llamas, Tredici Bacci and The Heavy Blinkers. In fact, "Paradise" is produced by Sean O'Hagan (Microdisney, The High Llamas).

Run For Cover Records released this in 2022. They also released 2020's "Blanket of Calm".

Healing Potpourri (Simi Sohota) is a San Francisco based musician who cut his teeth at KDVS in Davis, CA. There he was exposed to the amazing "stacks". Rows and rows, rooms and rooms, just wall to wall vinyl. I'm guessing he picked through Microdisney, The High Llamas (Sean O'Hagan does work with him on his new album), Beulah, and others.

I'm guessing artists as varied as Aaron Frazer, Kaz Mirblouk (also a KDVS acolyte) and Helado Negro might enjoy Healing Potpourri. Frankly, it sounds like it could be released on NNA Tapes (Tredici Bacci). Run For Cover Records (Boston, Massachusetts) is releasing the new album, "Paradise" in August 2022.

1/15/17.

“B-Grade Material”.  When I saw the title, I knew that this was an album of outakes (apparently from “Restless”).  But, how often does an album of outtakes surpass one’s expectations?  I remember thinking that “Dead Letter Office” from R.E.M. was outstanding. 

“B-Grade Material” is excellent.  You can’t beat “No Reasons” for an album opener.  And, in my estimation, The Ocean Party have a unique sound.  It’s really hard to pinpoint their influences.  The Triffids, Prefab Sprout, and a slew of other contemporary Australian artists begin to tell the tale - but The Ocean Party do have a unique sound.  I think this is due to the fact that they have so many songwriters with various side-projects:  Ciggie Witch, The Removalists, Snowy Nasdaq & Snowy Life, or Cool Sounds.

The Ocean Party will be playing live on KDVS on March 25th (4 pm).  They will also be playing live at Armadillo Music, in Davis, CA,  on the evening of March 25th.

6/5/23.

Day two of the Mock Records "blowout" posts. Mock Records (Los Angeles, California) is having the rare 50% salde (code: blowout). I think I spent $40 and got 4 different releases. Outstanding.

Today is a twofer of sorts. 1st we are posting about Kaz Mirblouk's most recent LP "Careless by Contrast". Mirblouk went to UC Davis, worked at KDVS and is a member of Hooveriii. His music tends more and more to psych rock although songs like "Fracture" have a post-punk feel. And while my favorite release of his is still his 7" on Six Tonnes de Chair, there is a lot to like here and it grooves (makes one wonder if he contributed to the excellent Groop LP also on Mock).

2nd, Mirblouk is performing at the Davis Music Fest (June 16-18). He'll be performing at the Oddfellows Hall on Saturday, June 17th at 9:15 p.m. Other bands: French Cassettes, Maita, Bug Bath, and so many more.
