so spoilers I was gonna come here and talk about all the parallels between rouge and Jack with the whole outerspace bounty hunter, flirting with psychic paper, calling the doctor "doc" all of which had me so excited until I heard THIS and my entire soul fractured I was SO EXITED.

Alright. If Whitby is in his 50s during the 12th expedition, that would mean he was in his 20s during the 1st expedition. And the Rogue appeared on the Forgotten Coast some 20 years before the border manifested. So, depending on his exact age, if Whitby is both the Rogue and the child the Rogue yelled at over the fence… then Gloria being 9–10 when the border came down would put Whitby in his late teens or maybe his early 20s. Then again, we don’t know the exact date when the Rogue yelled at the child.

I haven’t finished the book yet, but Jack seems keenly interested in Whitby — and in a strange way, so does Lowry. It could be that Whitby is from the Forgotten Coast but left before its destruction. I think Lowry mentioned (amidst a fit of curses) that Whitby attended some prestigious horse-riding school, which doesn’t sound like something that would belong on the Forgotten Coast.

But if the White Rabbit experiment in the ’90s sent the rabbits back into the ’60s through some embedded or not-yet-awakened factor, then it’s possible Whitby was sent back to the Forgotten Coast at the end of Acceptance, when the border overtook the Southern Reach. That might explain why the Rogue was described as a man on a mission who is, at last, home.

Hell, I didn’t even realize Charlie was in Absolution, though he’s young there. I believe he’s in his late 30s in Acceptance, which would make him a teenager during the Dead Town expedition. That could mean Absolution is an alternate timeline of earlier events. Who knows — maybe it’s a time loop.
