Thoughts on the J-Novel Translation of The Slayers, Ch 3
* Damn...Zel! He basically said he wanted to kill Lina and only kept her alive so that Zolf could torment her. That did not make it in the TokyoPop. I remember hearing about how non-Japanese speakers how no idea how cold Zel was in the novels but I really didn’t see much of that in the translations. Now I’m starting to get it (I don’t remember if that was in the Yuu-chan translation, I think the shock of how Zolf wanted everyone to rape her overshadowed anything else).
And on that note, Zolf is such a sadistic asshole and I’m glad he died.
* That said, given that Zel originally wanted to kill her (and supposing he wasn’t saying this to intimidate her into talking), it makes me wonder what changed between the time he interrogated her and when he decided to make a run for it with her. Zel stated the the plan had changed, which makes me wonder if there was some sort of confrontation with Rezo that pushed Zel over the edge, resulting in his defection. That Rezo decided to come down to check on them supports this, as he must have been worried about what Zel would do in his anger. There’s a missing scene there!
* There must be some good period protection in the Slayersverse. I mean, first day flow but Lina goes from being captured in the morning, strung up in a church until late into the evening and never needs to change her pants? Also amazed at her bladder control. Of course, I guess she could have left out all the gritty details.
* Koala is back in this translation! That makes me happy.

-Ah, Lina admiring Gourry’s skill with a sword. Read all the subtext you like in that.<3
-Gourry so knows how to weaponize appearing stupid. He’s so nonchalant about finding the Zorom is a demon and his routine is just so polished. He has to have done this before.
-You know, it suddenly occurs to me that perhaps the reason Gourry’s mind wanders is because Lina just talks so much. Like, Gourry, Zel, Zolf and Rodimus were all exhausted by how much she talks. I’m sure we’ve all experienced someone who just carries on a conversation all on their own and after awhile we just tune them out.
-It was good to get an actual measurement of how powerful a Dragon Slave is (capable of destroying a small castle), especially because in the anime it is so inconsistent. It was also good to get an acknowledgement that a kingdom with a corrupt sorcerer at their disposal would be able to abuse their power.
-Interesting. I guess I’d always assumed Zel didn’t want to be seen in Atlas City because of shame over his appearance, but in this translation Zel admits to doing bad things and that his face is well known and it wouldn’t be safe for him to enter. So less of a prejudice towards people who look different and more of a person with a past. So far Zel is definitely a lot colder in this translation.
First novel is done! Can’t wait to start The Sorcerer of Atlas City! That one is one of my favs and just a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what this new translation will reveal!
Thought on J-Novels Translation of Slayers, Ch 2
They are getting this out fast! I guess they know we’re eager to get to the later stuff! That said I am very impressed with this translation!
-I’m now wondering where the bandits stole the orihalcon statue from. Especially with this translation it makes it clear that Zolf infiltrated the bandits and used them to raid the place where the statue was. There must be a story of some poor temple that was raided by bandits and lost their precious statue that has never made it into the Slayersverse!
-It also set the time of the month stuff up better. I remembered getting a sense when I read the Yuu-chan translation that they were foreshadowing Lina losing her powers and that Lina was aware that her powers were getting weaker, but that didn’t really make it into the TokyoPop version.
-Gourry’s big brother tone comes out much more strongly in this translation!
-There’s more of a sense that Lina needs supplies to cast spells in this translation
-The mythology was translated so well! It was so much easier to follow and understand! Important elements that were glazed over in the TokyoPop translation, such as the Aqualord and Airlord etc, were introduced and well explained.
J-Novel Translation of Ch 1 of The Slayers
I’ve now read three different translations of the first chapter of the first Slayers novel. Yuu-chan’s fan translation on inverse.org way back in the day, and Tokyo Pop’s and J-Novel’s. I’d read the Yuu-chan translation so long ago my memories are vague, and where I do remember it diverging from the TokyoPop translation it involves scenes in later chapters, so I can’t comment about it here. After discussing some things with people who can read Japanese it does seem as thought J-Novel’s translation is more accurate. Lina is more confident at the beginning, though I did miss the “cue the chorus of angels” when Gourry arrived. Overall I am enjoying the J-Novel translation.
