The Master citing Freedom as his goal was a great nod to the Sith code.
He's framing it as wanting to be able to simply live his life but that's not the truth of the Sith.
The Sith believe the force will free them, but not from persecution: from restraint, from holding back, from being lesser. They wish to use the force to free themselves of the rules of morality. To bend the world to their will, freedom to do what they please.
The Code of Ashara
Curiously, what is your interpretation of the Sith code?
Thank you so much for the ask! This might get a big long, however.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion
This line could easily mean, don't be complacent. A complacent Dark sider is a dead Dark sider. But I take it to mean that emotions that don't overwhelm are useless and to be shunned. The Sith favor intense emotions over every other kind, the kind that overwhelm and control you. Where Jedi are the calm in the center of the storm, the Sith are the storm itself, and they don't see anything wrong with this. They enjoy wreaking havoc and destruction.
through passion I gain strength
Emotions are well known to give a Force user potency when accessing it. Jedi certainly do use their feelings, but they're in control of them. The Sith does the opposite: gives in to rage, hate, fear, and they assume this gives them an edge over their opponents in battle.
through strength I gain power
Sith are always seeking to be the 'top' of their food chain and think that they can maintain that position indefinitely. Palpatine certainly was able to, but he had no real competition. Maul and Savage tried and failed, even when they took him on together. Dooku was beaten before there was even a battle, and he was eliminated by his replacement.
through power I gain victory
Sith love conquest either through direct action, or in Palpatine's case, through far more subtler means. Both camps fall into the fallacy that fear will always be enough to keep people subjugated and beneath Sith boots. Anger is the stronger emotion, a tried and true motivator, and often overrides fear. It's ironic that they have to overcome their own fear of their mentor in order to take their place, but don't see that happening from ordinary people.
through victory my chains are broken
This line is the actual lie .The Sith are shackled, constantly chained, and mostly to their own selfishness. Anakin's selfishness had him reaching out to the Dark to save Padme, when if he'd simply laid out the situation instead of being as vague as possible, he might have gotten an answer out of Yoda that would've helped. Anakin has an impossible time letting anything go. Palpatine is the same way, but in a far more ruthless fashion. It wasn't enough that he won the Chancellor's seat. He had to keep it, all for himself. Palpatine chains himself to his empire, Vader is likewise shackled to Palpatine, and remains his armored, helmeted slave for nearly twenty years. Anakin isn't free until he breaks his chains by returning to the light.
The Dark side is so dark, the Sith can't see the manacles on their wrists and ankles, nor the slave collars around their necks.
Kylo Ren + Sith Code
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
| The Sith Code | Written by Sorzus Syn
"So we can believe the big ones?" YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. THAT SORT OF THING. "Peace?” YES. THE GALAXY IS DOTTED WITH MASSIVE FURNACES, BURNING AND MIXING AND SPEWING OUT ENERGY AND MATTER IN NEW FORMS, AND THIS IS THE BASIS OF ALL THAT IS. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE IS SOME FORM OF PEACE OR ORDER TO THE UNIVERSE, AS IF THERE IS SOME...SOME RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED. "Perhaps for others, but as Sith, we have rejected these lies.” AND THAT IS WHY YOU FALL.
You got that medicine I need? Dope, shoot it up straight to the heart, please...
