Si tu voyais son cœur (2017, Joan Chemla)
hey. psspspspspspspsps
The people from town always ask him, "Why do you go down to the beach so often?"
Normally, he just answers, "I love the sound of the waves" or "The ocean is calming to me".
But that's not the complete truth. True, he loves the sound of the waves breaking and crashing on the shore, the crispness of the ocean air, how it holds that distinct saltiness that he can taste once he breathes in deep enough. He loves the cold breeze that brushes past him, and even the gray sky that looks as though overcast will forever live in this small seaside town. Yes, he loves the ocean and the sand and every little part of it that makes the beach so unlike the photographs for summer and vacation spots. From the rocky outcroppings to the drying sand, he will never deny loving any part of it.
But.
There is one little other thing that he loves about the beach. One small, precious secret that always waits for him patiently, hidden by the outcroppings.
"Are you planning on having a picnic on the beach?" Asks a local, their head tilted in confused interest as David carries a basket and a blanket towards his usual destination.
"Ah, yes!" He shifts the basket a bit on his arm, getting it in a more comfortable position. "I just find reading on the beach more... calming for me. Gets me away from all the distractions and stuff! So I figured I'd might as well eat my lunch there too, since it's getting close to that time."
"I see." The local looks around nervously before patting his shoulder gently. "Just be careful of... you know."
"Don't worry! I'll keep an eye out for him."
"Alright." They offer him a smile and a nod as they walk away. David waves after them, turning back to the stairs to get lost in his thoughts. He gets the feeling that maybe the townsfolk are a little aware of what's going on. Just not enough to get the full grasp of it.
As it should be, he thinks, as he carefully navigates the outcroppings. It's better for everyone involved if they just think that a seal occasionally likes to hunker by his side. He hops onto a particularly flat rock and lays the blanket down. The basket is set down next, keeping the blanket in place as he waits for a familiar face to pop up.
And pop up it does. A gray, speckled seal pops his head up from under the waves, before ducking back down to swim closer. David tucks his legs under him and smiles as the seal pops up again, his large, blue eyes looking at him sweetly as he huffs a greeting.
"Heya, Jasp."
A knowing look crosses those beautiful blue eyes as the seal flops his way onto the rock before curling up. David leans forward to rest his chin in his hand, watching as his beloved selkie emerges from the wet furcoat with a head full of brown, soggy locks, and those same, beautiful blue eyes.
"Heya, Davey."
"How was your day?"
"Just the usual." Jasper walks onto the blanket to sit down, a smile already on his lips as he slicks his wet bangs out of his eyes. "Caught some fish, swam with the local seals, had a chat with our favorite bat." He glances up at the sky and winks. David follows his gaze as a black blur circles around them before zooming off in chase of something. "But my day just got better already."
"Oh, jeez." He can't help the blush that rises to his face as Jasper's smile brightens. "You know I never have a response for that!"
"Maybe you don't gotta respond with words." Jasper wiggles his eyebrows, drawing a laugh from David. "Actions are just good."
"You could just ask," he teases back, but already his face is leaning closer to Jasper's.
"You know me," Jasper responds, his lips just a breath's away from David's, "I like seeing you smile first."
There's many things he loves about the beach here, he thinks, as their lips press together softly. The beach is like coming home to a warm embrace and a warmer smile. The beach is like finding the missing piece of his life, the single puzzle piece he didn't realize he was missing until he stumbled upon it that fateful day. The beach is like kissing someone he loves deeply and truly, like memorizing the feel of his lips and still having it feel like the first kiss, like pulling apart and staring into eyes that match the dreamy feeling he holds in his chest, like falling in love over and over again until he lets his forehead drop onto a wet shoulder and giggle because this.
This is home.
The beach is home. Because Jasper is here, and Jasper loves him, and he loves Jasper. He feels those lips he's memorized kiss his forehead tenderly before he's pulled into a tight embrace.
The beach is home.
That's why he loves the beach so.
