There's a Netflix adaptation of Roald Dahl's The Twits out, and we sat down to watch it as a family, then shut it off halfway through, which is honestly more than I thought it deserved.
I knew that it was going to go wrong two minutes in when the narrator says:
The thing is, even people who hate everything love something.
And this is, two minutes in, a failure to adapt the book. This is from page 7:
If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until it gets so ugly you can hardly bear to look at it.
A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.
Nothing shone out of Mrs Twit's face.
Then there's a bunch of stuff about orphans, an amusement park the Twits are trying to build called Twitlandia, and at the point we stopped, halfway through, they were doing a Trump metaphor with Mr Twit running for mayor of the city and making huge promises to gullible voters with no intention of ever keeping any of them.
And I get that it's a short book, so they had to add something on, but having the Twits seem to enjoy each other's company is just awful.
My son said, in disgust "the Muggle-Wumps aren't even monkeys".
