Vampires in the buffyverse kill other vampires. The master has the three killed for failing him. Spike and Drusilla threaten to kill Dalton multiple times but keep him alive to translate the book holding Drusilla's cure but allow the judge to kill him once he is no longer needed. Angelus creates vampires just to die bothering Buffy like the Immolation-o-gram. Spike tries to stake Harmony for being annoying.

Basically the only ways to be a vampire in a group and be safe are 1) be the oldest/strongest, 2) be useful, or 3) be liked.

So let's look at Spike during the whirlwind days. He is the youngest and weakest. He isn't useful and actually causes them a lot of problems like getting chased by mobs. Why was he kept alive? We are shown Spike getting threatened and hurt but clearly never dusted. It doesn't make sense unless the rest of the Whirlwind liked him enough to keep him around.

Do you think that Spike aka "love's bitch" ever acted out as a way to seek reassurance that he was still loved and wanted? Do you think in Spike's mind "threatening your life but not following through" became a sign of affection? Do you think Spike annoys people on purpose because he is asking "do you love me enough to let me get away with this"?
