4. Movie of the year?

i really did not go to or even really watch many movies this year! weird! but it’s still gotta be La Chimera. incredible film and so very for me. i invited two friends to come with me to see it, none of us knowing really anything about it, and afterwards they were like wow this was so weird and niche and we like you better for bringing us to see this? great stuff. really have not stopped thinking about it since i saw it.

14. Favorite book you read this year?

i read a lot of good books this year but probably A Letter to the Luminous Deep by Sylvie Cathrall because it came out of nowhere (i picked it up at my local shop and bought it on the strength of “epistolary”) and was again really really For Me. really felt like it had been sitting there on the shelf, waiting for me. (here’s a review, if you’re interested)

24. Did you keep any New Year’s Resolutions?

i don’t usually make them but last year all of the denizens of lizardchat made fun resolutions and i just checked mine. it was: to replay all of the nancy drew video games. i did not replay ALL of the nancys but i did replay 20 of them! and reviewed 19.

Could you please share some thoughts on Sherlock & Joan Watson? What are they doing at this point in the pandemic? What trip are they planning for when this is all over?

I love them so much. At this point in the pandemic, Joan has acquired heretofore undreamt-of yoga flexibility, and Sherlock has acquired a habit of circumambulating Manhattan (as in the Great Saunter, but on his own.) They’re doing online Mandarin practice with Arthur. Sherlock is also teaching himself Arabic. After the pandemic is over, they’re planning to go to Indonesia, which may or may not give rise to a story for which the world is not yet ready...

chaotic academia asks: everything beginning with C, please!

curiosity- what’s a topic you have weirdly in depth knowledge about?

The Brontës. I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but I do know a lot about them. To the point where my professor defers to me in discussions about them.

clutter- are you an organized person?

Kind of. I always start off with the intention of being organized, and I do usually know where all my things are. But as I spend time in a space, things start to pile up or I don’t put things back, and suddenly it’s not organized. But I still know where everything is! Organized chaos, I suppose.

community- describe your current friend group?

Friends, what are those? I feel like I haven’t seen most of mine in over a year now. I’ll describe my roommates since I spend more time with them than anyone right now, and we get along well. They are:

C - She’s a composition PhD student in her 30′s. We consider her the “dad friend” because she’s fairly handy and fixes anything that breaks herself. She also makes terrible dad jokes. She takes Latin classes for fun, and she does beautiful embroidery.

A - She’s a fiction MFA student in her late 20′s. Her style is goth/punk, and she’s amazing at doing make up. She’s loud, dramatic, and absolutely hilarious. And she has a beautiful voice because she’s a trained singer. She also has an adorable cat, who I think I’ve posted pictures of before.

L - She’s a nonfiction MFA student in her late 20′s. She’s into astrology and tarot cards as well as reality TV like The Bachelor and Survivor. She lived in Thailand for a while and has some crazy stories about her time there. She’s outgoing and a lot of fun. She’s also very involved in organizing events for the MFA students, such as their readings.

2020 books & reading asks: 2, 9, 10, & 11, please!

Did you have any reading goals, and if you did did you complete them?

I always challenge myself to read 50 books - it was a close call, but I managed to finish my 50th book of the year a couple of days ago! 

What’s the book you were most excited about before you started it?

Definitely Loveless by Alice Oseman! Thankfully, it was as amazing as I expected.

What book was better than you expected it to be?

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune. I don’t know what I expected, but it completely blew me away.

What book didn’t live up to the hype?

I don’t know if anyone else was hyped for it, because it’s a relatively small UKYA series, but I was so excited for The Burning Kingdoms by Sally Green, and it was... hugely disappointing.

Do you have any recs for lighthearted romances?

I think I know a few :) I’ll do some YA and some adult fiction ^.^

Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern (it’s got another title I can’t recall)

and just for something different: Stardust by Neil Gaiman. the romance is a bit more background but I enjoyed that one :)
