Eugène Atget, a French photographer and pioneer of documentary photography, captured these images of Paris, France in the early 20th century. Atget sought to capture the look and feel of Paris before modernization radically transformed the cityscape. A rarity in our collection of American art, they were a part of Eliot Porter’s personal photography collection and were donated to the museum as a part of his bequest.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Paris.
