🔊volume up🔊 Hey everyone! Something that I know some other theatre lovers struggle with is understanding the lyrics and words during a show. I have been mostly deaf since birth and worn hearing aids all my life. With the help of great technology and a lot of tips and tricks, my hearing loss does not hold me back from doing the things I enjoy. However, something I do before every show I see is read through the script. While I can usually hear pretty well in the theatre, I do miss things sometimes and having a vague idea of what is being said ahead of time is a huge help. I know some venues offer devices that help those with hearing loss, but I like to avoid that if possible due to the misconception that I’m being rude/ on my phone (or god forbid being called out/ shamed by a cast member like the incident during Hadestown). So, in case anyone has been listening to the audio of the musical and having trouble understanding, I made a screen recording with the audio and script for my favorite scene (the scene with the Curtis brothers after Little Brother and before Stay Gold). My favorite part is when Darrel’s voice breaks when he talks about losing their parents. I’ve probably listened to this 100 times and I still get a bit teary lol. Enjoy!

Finally got through watching the whole filmed production of Next To Normal from the Donmar Warehouse as filmed by PBS (link here for those of us who aren't in the US that's available until the end of June, I think?) and god, this show. This show. There's something about it coming to the UK, post pandemic, post lockdown in a very different world to the original cast recording of the 2009 Broadway run.

Instead of being Diana's jock like protector, Gabe is a child. A frightened baby who died and is trying to get Dan and Natalie to see that and acknowledge him and whilst I cannot take anything away from the brilliance of the original cast, the sheer amount of pathos that radiates from the west end cast that I actually understand now, and didn't when I first listened back in 2012 is just something else entirely.

Anyway, if anyone needs me I'm a sobbing mess of a human who is actually quite glad that I didn't see this live because I think I would've had to be escorted out of the theatre ih a sobbing heap if I had and instead could curl up on my sofa and howl my heart out.

And yet I would choose almost no other way to have spent my day.
