In Jesus, the Beloved Son, we find ACCESS to the Father. 👇 As Jesus, in His baptism, was given the assurance, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased,” we too are given the confidence that we are God’s beloved children, in whom He is well-pleased. While our sinful, selfish choices have separated us from God, through Jesus, we are once again connected to God. Before us is presented an open ACCESS to an open door. Jesus invites us to bury our sinful self in the waters of baptism—just as He, being our Example, did—and then come up out of the waters to live a new life; a selfless, self-giving, love-centered, other-centered life through Christ. Jesus, while being the Sinless One, identified Himself with us, sinners, and came to John to be baptized. ‘Your names are heathen and Jesus needs holy names.’ – Ijeoma Umebinyuo

This week’s seminar focused on The Baptism by Umebinyuo, which centers around the process of Catholic Baptismal naming. I think the main theme in this poem is colonisation, and how European rites and traditions have been imposed on people of colour, the colonised.

The poem goes, ‘Excuse me, but you cannot have “Obianuju” as her baptismal name but here are a number of European saints You can choose from – How about Agnes?’

When reading those last few lines, I can actually hear the disrespectful voices of those echoing sentiments like these. A name is an identity. It is yours, separate from mine and everybody else’s. But, colonisation has birthed dominant Western traditions and practices, and with this, the identities of the oppressed have been reworked. In the second stanza of the poem, Umebinyuo speaks of how ‘Obianuju’ cannot be used as a name, as God will not understand it. I cannot help but laugh at the absurdity of this. And, later in the poem, the speaker goes on to say that a name such as this, will bring in darkness. There is clearly a huge imbalance of power within the poem, where the dominance is given to the Europeans. So, this poem deals with more than just the Catholic tradition of baptism, it deals with colonial wounds, religion and identity.

I see this poem as an ode to those who have been left voiceless, powerless in the face of colonialism and its oppressive structures that still persist today. Again, this is what is so wonderful about poetry, it gives people a voice, it gives them power – something which the colonised have been robbed of. I find this poem extremely powerful, in the way it is written and in the way it responds to a singular tradition, yet says so much more about other recurring issues in society. This piece critiques dominant notions of religious traditions and the imposition of Western identity onto the oppressed. This is something that needs to be talked about more, it can never be discussed enough, in fact. We need to face the pain that we have caused in the world. We need to offer a space for healing, for liberation.
