Fritz Leiber - The Big Time (1958) A novel which was the sole nominee and winner of the Hugo award in 1958, it is a bit of a queer duck. Set in some kind of way station in the middle of a Time War, where all kinds of people, from Roman centurions to WWII Nazis to Venusians and future people, congregate as part of that war. The whole book is a confusing mess, but there are real moments of brilliance. I had never read any of Leiber's Science Fiction, having only read his Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser fantasy series, but there are some qualities in common to that series here. It's dense, Leiber is always dense, there's always the constant feeling that you are missing details, that you have already forgotten some important characters, etc. It's not really a page turner even being a really short novel, a little over 100 pages. So, it's kind of hard to say that I enjoyed reading this, but I did enjoy reading parts of it. A big mess with some diamonds here and there, Leiber is clearly a talented writer but he never really managed to grab me that much, maybe it's my problem.
