In Javert in Disarray, Hugo does a really good job of illustrating Javert's internal struggle that eventually leads to him conceding that no, the law is not perfect and that he cannot live with this realization. What's hilarious to me, however, is that rather than immediately pitching himself off the bridge, he goes first to the local police station and writes up a list of EVERYTHING he thinks is wrong with the police system and sends it to his department head and THEN goes and pitches himself of a bridge. This man goes from believing the law is perfect to listing out every single thing wrong with it in less than half an hour. Dude really is all or nothing.
