“What’s CRAZY,” the smuggler began to answer, irritation clear in his tone, in the way he carried himself as though the weight of the entire crew was on his shoulders, “Is that I’m slumming it back here in ENGINEERING when I oughta be the goddamn CAPTAIN of this hunk of junk.” 

On the other hand, distant from his own annoyance at current circumstance, the reward money WAS crazy. A few days of being ordered around would pay off a serious chunk of the debt he’d been racking up for himself, almost all of it if he could convince his partner in crime that walking away with the entire take wouldn’t REALLY hurt the idiots they were serving. “The next time one of those slimeballs tries to get me to cover their shit, I’m gonna punch someone.”

The man was well practised at this by now. Years in this galaxy alone, hunted by forces that wished him dead, a man picked up a few skills when thrown into a life like that one. The modular rifle lay before him in pieces. Polished and pristine, the long journey to the mission had seemed a good time to maintain the weapon, a good chance to AVOID awkward small talk with the woman he had been partnered with. Their mutual employer either had an interesting sense of humor, or the ruthless bastard was sending them into a nightmare that couldn’t be handled alone. 

Alec was leaning towards the latter. 

Content with his own company in the living space, there was little but the sound of the occasional clatter of space debris rattling against the freighter’s hull to disturb him from his his work. He could have done this blindfolded after all these years. Peace, solitude, the soothing process of the reassembly was completed with the final click of the power pack sliding into place. It was his luck that with it, he noticed his companion appearing in the hollow of the hallway. Eyes narrowing, he set the weapon back down on the table before him to address the woman, “It takes a special kind of person to sneak up on me, Mara Jade.”

Did Eron expect anything less of the redhead? He had half a mind to roll his eyes and simply shrug it off – if they were to work together and make sure this damn mission would see to its end, one of them had to be the more reasonable one. Funny how the task fell onto him now, when he was in this situation, when it never had happened before; he always did work better alone. Throwing Mara a side glance, he replied, deadpan, “I’m feeling very reassured. Thanks for the reminder.” He could play this game too.

Wincing at the solution stinging at his arm, Han balled his hand into a fist as she worked. Smart might not have been the word.  “Y’know, you’re not NEARLY as cute as you think you are.” There they had the first lie of the day, "If I hadn’t bumped the switch on the vibroknife, I’d have been FINE. Woulda tidied everything away in ONE TRIP. That WOULD have been smart.”
