You think one’s life belongs to oneself. But that’s the difference between the East and the West. In the East, a person’s life is part of a whole.

Spirit Awards: ‘Farewell’s’ Lulu Wang Urges Hollywood to Champion Female Filmmakers in Best Film Speech
There's been a lot of conversation this year about how to encourage more women in film or get more women into the conversation. And I just have to say that we don't have to encourage women, there are lots of women making films and who wanna make films. And who are in film school and so, you know, Shadow programmes are great, but really what women need is just the job. Just give them the frickin' job!
“I think it’s a very Western gaze, probably specifically an American gaze, to look at food — particularly ethnic food — in this very romanticized way. That’s just a part of life, it’s so engrained in [Chinese] culture. I wanted to capture that as a texture of family and of life without elevating it beyond the other textures. Food allowed me to visualize the internal tension of the lie. Having food around all the time was a constant reminder that this is supposed to be a celebration, you’re supposed to be eating. How do you explain to grandma that you don’t have an appetite and you don’t want to eat? You can’t. So you swallow the food along with the grief as part of this lie.” –Lulu Wang
The Farewell (2019)
I’ve walked the path of life and I must tell you, you’ll encounter difficulties, but you have to keep an open mind. Don’t be the bull endlessly ramming its horns into the corner of the room. Life is not just about what you do, it’s more about how you do it.
