Have you watched Broadcast News? There's a line, "I would give anything if you were two people so that I could call up the one who's my friend and tell her about the one that I like so much!" I feel like it rings true to where Matt's head is at. Before he can be in a relationship that lasts, he needs to learn to ask for help. He knows he can go to Sylvie about certain things like he did about the drowning victim, but he hasn't gone to her for many things outside of work. (1/2)

I don't know if that's what the show is trying to achieve, but maybe he needs to first learn how to articulate his insecurities before articulating what he feels for Sylvie. It could also show how much he values her in his life, which Sylvie probably needs reminding. (2/2)

Hmmm. Okay, now THAT might be interesting.

If Matt gets low and raw and vulnerable and in that low moment seeks out Sylvie to confide in — THAT would feel like progress to me and a gesture to show Sylvie how truly important to him she is and how much implicit trust he has in her. 🥺

So if 9x09 is the START of that low moment and he hides it from everyone as people in the fandom are guessing and then 9x10 is him seeking out Sylvie for help with dealing with it then...

I could maybe get on board.

I’ve been wanting Matt to truly open up to her for two seasons now. So, if this is my moment for that I would wind up being happy with that, I think.

I feel ya about being feeling so down about Brettsey lately! I feel like there was 100% a way for Matt to work through his guilt/regret with Sylvie's support as a couple. But I guess the question in 9x02 derailed that option, even though I love that moment of growth for Sylvie. This season's pacing frustrates me, but I see a lot of promise in the way the season will go for Matt to grapple with his feelings of unworthiness. In his mind, he's already got a second chance after Hallie. (1/3)

Does he deserve a third chance, especially with someone like Sylvie, who in his mind deserves the best? They've made Greg a good officer, which happens to be the only ability Matt is particularly confident in. I hope that forces Matt to dig deeper to figure out why he specifically is the right choice for Sylvie. I think the watch could bring poignant realizations. I appreciated how they contrasted Matt's reaction, that memorializing his first love to the point of being stagnant was noble, (2/3)

to Christy's reaction, which seemed slightly critical of his over-romanticization of the watch. I also think it was promising that Christy explicitly mentions that secrets have plagued their family. Hopefully, all of these things force some self-reflection and see that he can still have love and appreciation for those in his past while living his life to the fullest IF HE STARTS BEING HONEST WITH HIMSELF AND OTHERS! Not exactly an ask but you did spark some major overthinking on my part. (3/3)

Oh wow! I love this analysis! I was so caught up in Matt’s reaction that I missed Christie’s! But you’re right! She seemed more bemused by Matt’s awe of the watch than anything else. Which makes sense for her. She’s been divorced longer than Matt and probably moved on easier from Jim. (But I bet you went through a similar stagnant phase.)

Matt for sure has some insecurities to work through regarding worthiness. The more I think about it, the more I hope this head injury brings that to light and it’s Sylvie that he confides in. I would be on board for that sort of deep dive into the possibilities of his future by looking at his past!

He does need to start being honest and also needs to realize he CAN ask for help when he needs it. That doesn’t make him weak. Hopefully, that’s where this plot will take us! 🙏🏻
