Theyâve gone several days without telling anyone about their engagement. Keeping it a secret feels wrong but also like the correct decision. Temporarily anyway.
At first, she lets making sure Matt is okay take precedence. They agreed they would celebrate once he was discharged from the hospital, which was yesterday, but even after that being there for Mouch and Trudy feels bigger and more urgent. As soon as theyâre able to, they intend to join the rotation of people who will sit in the cardiac ICU with Mouch and Trudy. They make a decision to put off any announcements to 51 until they know Mouch is going to pull through.

a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on
Reblog if you're a writer who doesn't use AI.
Haven't touched that shit, and won't.
I spent decades honing my voice. It's a tool for me now, and a well-made tool. Why on earth would I defer to a corporately-extruded overmasticated statistical pink slime word-barf machine? Why?
I know youâre busy, thereâs so much to do, I know life is hard. But you are too young to surrender. Donât give up yourself to a bot who has never even seen the sun rise; who has never fallen and gotten up again as you have.
I'd rather stop writing than use AI. I didn't spend years of my life getting good at it to use the unlearning machine to churn out crap.
No thank you. đââď¸
what advice do you have for someone wanting to write Sylvie for the first time? I have wrote Matt before but never Sylvie. Itâll be a Brettsey fic Iâm writing after writing Matt with reader, named reader and an original female character. I love Sylvie and want to make sure I get her right and youâre the Queen of Sylvie Brett Tumblr
thatâs very sweet of you to say, thank you! âĽď¸
i have 1739273827 unfinished brettsey fics laying around in google docs so iâm not the best person to ask about writing sylvie. HOWEVER. there are lots of talented brettsey fic writers whose work i love and who write sylvie really well - @alittlextrathatway and @sylkiddsey are amazing in particular so i would highly recommend checking them out!
one thing that i like to do when writing canon characters is to go back and watch scenes theyâre in (or a full episode if i have the time) to get a feel for them. i recommend doing that as well!
Hi! My biggest pieces of advice for writing Sylvie Brett accurately:
-Yes, she wears her heart on her sleeve but it takes a lot to make her truly angry and she doesnât cry in front of anyone ever. These are observations based on obsessively watching her seasons over and over again but theyâre the two biggest aspects of her personality that people often get wrong.
-Also sheâs a peacemaker with people pleasing tendencies, but sheâs not a doormat. Itâs a delicate balance. She will go above and beyond for people she cares about and she offers trust and forgiveness very liberally but sheâs protective of her people and her peace. If you hurt either, she will stand up to you and let you know exactly how your actions make her feel. Also, thanks in part to Matt Casey, Sylvie has learned to set boundaries however she does still seem hesitant to ask for what she wants or needs, emotionally speaking. She has proven herself capable of asking, but still hesitant.
-Sylvie knows sheâs a catch. She knows sheâs sexy. She believes people when they call her cute or beautiful. Her insecurities are not external. Theyâre internal. Her formative years were spent side by side with gaslighters like Harrison and Hope so you can imagine how that might have impacted her emotionally. She constantly thinks her emotions and reactions are âcrazyâ or donât âmake sense.â Sheâs neither totally insecure nor totally confident. Again, itâs a balance.
-And last but not least, even though Sylvie was adopted by a loving family, being adopted still influences her relationships â romantic or platonic. Sylvie, subconsciously probably, feels she must be of use or value to keep people around or to have good things in her life. There are deep abandonment issues within her, which werenât helped by the revolving door of partners or the sudden death of her birth mother. That being said, she is not mopey or weepy or self pitying about any of it. If anything, sheâs learned not to take people for granted. Though, it may prevent her from asking for things she may need from a friendship or romantic relationship. (Sheâs gotten much better about this since she and Matt started becoming closer. Now, sheâll more than likely ask though she seems hesitant and self conscious when she does.)
And then one final observation about Brettsey based on actor interviews and insights:
-Sylvie is the humor to Mattâs solemnity. Sheâs goofy and silly and earnest yet determined and resilient. Matt is serious and occasionally brooding and typically reserved/controlled with his emotions. (Jealousy seems to be a weak point for him and, like Captain America, reigning in his anger in the face of a bully is a challenge, but for the most part he plays things close to the vest.) Heâll give you the shirt off his back anytime you need it, take on the weight of the world for you, and comfort you through any number of difficult things, but he has to be extremely comfortable with you to pour out his heart or ask for anything in return. He shoulders a lot of other peopleâs burdens and that creates a weary, somber exterior. Sylvie draws him out, makes him laugh, and eases his burdens as best she can. He can relax and not be a leader among men around her. He can just be Matt. A man who loves and laughs and has the freedom to be a little goofy/silly too.
One last general piece of advice when writing canon characterizations is in line with @sylviedonnas advice:
-Watch the show. Watch it over and over again and pay attention to the details. The little habits the character have (Sylvie twists her watch band or tucks her hair behind her ears, Matt makes fists and clenches and unclenches them or tucks and untucks his arms like he doesnât know what to do with them). When writing dialogue, play an episode or two in the background to remind yourself of their voices. How do they talk? Rambly and nervous? Short and succinct? How much of themselves and their emotions do they give away in conversations? Does the conversation being public or private make a difference? Ask yourself those sort of questions and observe the show carefully.
That was probably a lot more advice than you asked for @sunshine-reign but hopefully some of it or any of it is helpful. đЎ
I have been obsessed with these two like it was my full time job (even though I worked for free lol) for years. Hopefully, some of my knowledge is useful to someone. đ

âSo,â Matt begins as he turns off the car. âHowâs it feel being back for the first time?â
âStrange. Almost like Iâm outside of time and space a little bit,â she replies, gnawing on her bottom lip between sentences. âThis is dumb, and I know weâve been gone eight months but coming back for a visit makes the move feel so final. Is that crazy?â
âNo, and itâs not dumb either,â he assures her, lifting the backs of her fingers to his lips. âTrust me. If anyone understands that feeling itâs me.â He glances in the rear view mirror, clearly checking on Julia, whoâs sound asleep in her car seat, and then turns to face her. âThe people in this house are our family and always will be. No matter where we live or what we do. Coming back to find things different is always going to make the decision to leave Chicago feelâŚbittersweet.â

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Chicago Fire Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Sylvie Brett/Matthew Casey Characters: Sylvie Brett, Matthew Casey, Ben Darden, Griffin Darden, Julia | Sylvie Brett's Ward Additional Tags: Life in Portland, Post-Canon, Canon Compliant, Found Family, chosen family, True Love, Friendship/Love, day in the life, Domesticity, Newly married, Flirting Summary:
From the second she accepted the position with Portland Fire and Rescue, she and Matt agreed they would work the same shift but not at the same house. Minimizing the odds of a situation like Arnow, where they were both at risk on the same call, became priority number one. Julia needed them. That was more important than working side by side every day.
In fact, their firehouses werenât even in the same district. That was intentional. Different districts typically meant they didnât overlap. In her six months on the job there had only been one exception and that was because of an extraordinarily large fire in between their neighboring districts.
Did she miss seeing Matt in action? Of course she did, but sheâd give up seeing him in action as a fire captain for seeing him in action as a dad any day. He was born to do both but only a handful of people got the opportunity to see how wonderful of a father Matt had become up close and personal. She was lucky to be the person seated in the middle of the very first row.
However, when the opportunity came up to cover a shift at his station, she wonât lie and say she didnât jump at the opportunity.

Sylvie spent the rest of shift, giving Cruz a wide berth. Matt pretended not to notice. Heâs grateful Cruz isnât on Truck anymore. Heâs not sure he could have handled that particular conflict of interest. Even before he and Sylvie started dating, heâd never been able to stand anyone who made her feel small. The fact that it was Joe Cruz who made Sylvie doubt herself made no difference.
âAre you sure youâre okay?â Matt asked as they left the firehouse with his arm protectively hanging around her shoulders.
Sylvie turned her head and pressed a kiss to his cheek. âYes, Iâm fine. It was just a blip in my confidence. You fixed me right up, Lieutenant.â
Matt nods but canât resist tossing a glare over his shoulder, pointed at Cruz. Yes, Joe had a shitty day but taking it out on Sylvie was inexcusable. Cruz has the decency to look contrite, avoiding Mattâs brief stare.

Kannell joins Squad 3 today.
And the only person nervous about it is Matt.
Severide seems indifferent. Not surprising given what heâs been through. And Kannell is hesitant. Neither are nervous. Matt on the other hand worries Severide maybe isnât in a good emotional place to welcome someone new to Squad 3 and Kannell doesnât need to be held at armâs length. Not right now.
Sylvie reaches over as he parks the Truck and rubs his arm and shoulder, her touch full of compassion and comfort. âItâll be okay, Matt. Even if today is awkward and hard, it doesnât mean every shift will be.â
Sheâs right. Today is a beginning. Beginnings can be rough. Still, heâs anxious.
He captures her hand as he squeezes his shoulder and then leans across the seats to give her a grateful kiss. âThank you.â

She didnât remember a lot of what she did after getting home from her shift. The last clear memory was her meeting with her chief. Now that she had officially hit the end of her first 6 months with Portland Fire and Rescue, she could be considering for internal job postings. Chief Grier wanted to make sure that Sylvie not only knew that, but registered for the next ambulance commander exam. There was an opening in the Non-Emergent Medicine Unit but they wanted someone who could, at the very least, grow into a promotion. She wanted to talk to Matt about it first so sheâd asked how long she could have to make a decision.
âI can give you till the end of next shift. Is that enough time?â
âPlenty,â she replied.
And it should have been.

A blush colors Sylvieâs cheeks as she rests her chin on his shoulder and beams up at him. âToo late to back out now anyway. Youâre stuck with me.â
âGood,â Matt declares, turning to face her. He pecks a quick and casual kiss to her lips while a low chuckle escapes him. âAnd I canât wait to walk down the aisle with you.â
âThis is sweet and all and I get the symbolism,â Stella says, smiling warmly at her friends. Matt swears he sees pride and relief in her eyes too and he wonders how hard it was for Kidd to stay out of their relationship even when things looked their darkest. She and Severide donât like to meddle but he canât help but wonder about her point of view. âBut are you really going to deny your friends and family, and most importantly me, the chance to see Caseyâs face when you step into the venue in your wedding dress?â
âOh come on,â Sylvie says, waving a hand dismissively. âIs that really that big of a deal?â
Stella freezes while consolidating the breakfast dishes and then stares at Sylvie as if sheâs lost her mind. âYou canât be serious. Tell me youâre joking.â
Sylvie looks truly clueless. Matt is too, to be honest. âWhat?â
