Made this and really wanted to share it.
JAMES: Human
I don’t remember much about my mother. I remembered only the smell of her hair and the tune to a song I didn’t know the words to. I only had her shawl and memories to remember her. She was taken away when I was barely five. She’s been gone for 10 years at this point. And no, she wasn’t taken because she was bad, but because of how our lives worked as humans. I was luckier than most, the scientist in charge of me was kind. Her name was Dr. Diana Nan. (She took care of my mother too). She basically became my mom. She also had a son, who was about five years younger than me. His name was Parker Nan. He had become like a brother to me.
“James, c’mon, give it baaaaack!” Parker reached in my clear box of a house/room. I dodged his fingers, ran up his arm, and slipped out of the box.
“See! That’s how you do it, Parks! I can escape-agh!” Parker’s right hand came up and gripped around my body.
“Give me back the ring! If I lose this…Mom’s gonna kill me!!!” He opened his grip and I found myself cupped in his hands, his thumb pressing over me. I squirmed, holding the giant ring as tight as I could. I was, obviously, no match for the strength of the giant. He held me down, gently, and slipped the ring out of my hand. He dropped the ring in his pocket and put me back into the glass box, closing the hatch behind me. I grinned and climbed my way, gripping the bars on the ceiling.
“Mom told me to watch this, y’know. I swear James!” Parker shot me one of those looks. I chuckled. This was the eighth time I’d stolen this ring from Parker, as a challenge from Dr. Nan. Parker didn’t know this and we thought it was hilarious. Though, if Parker became too aggressive, Dr. Nan would come in and stop him, luckily that never had to happen (yet).
“Relax, I-” The door swung open.
“Alright, we gotta run more tests on James. You can either stay and watch or leave, Parker.” The scientist in training, Lenny Calsworth, walked into the room. He was a 20 year old, shy, college newbie, studying anthropology. He was nice, but not as gentle as he should. Seeing that I’m a living person! But that’s not the point.
Parker left the room, not enjoying watching me be manhandled. Rarely holding me himself.
“Okay, James, uh, weight, right. Uhh, just stand here, I think.” He opened the hatch and carelessly pulled me off the bars. He gripped me a little too tightly, which made my ribs ache, but I had gotten used to it. He set me on the white weighing table, recording my weight on a paper on a clipboard.
“Right, so what’s next? Uh, height, yeah. Okay.” He pulled out a drawer and grabbed a ruler. (I should bring up the fact that giant measurements are different from what human measurements seemed to be.) He slammed the ruler down next to me.
“Uhhh, 25 flicks (5 feet/152 centimeters<I think>) and, let’s see, 40 trials (8 inches/20 centimeters<I think>). Is that tall for a human, James?”
“How would I know? I’ve never met any other humans, Lenny!” I sighed in exasperation. Lenny would (should) probably know more about humans than me.
“Right, sorry.” Lenny removed the ruler from the table and set it back in the drawer.
I went along with all the rest of the tests. I was aggressively manhandled too many times to count, but I knew poor, poor Lenny couldn’t help it. I genuinely did not like these days. They were antagonizing, but tolerable. I didn’t get scared anymore. I was used to it. I hadn’t lived in any other way.
“Okay, I think that’s everything.” Lenny quickly wrote something down, adjusted his white lab coat, and dropped me back in the clear box, closing the hatch. Then he left the room. Parker slipped back in, like routine.
“Are you okay? He didn’t hurt you or hold you too hard, right?” He quickly undid the hatch and lifted me out of the box. I stood up on his palm and made my way up his arm. He watched me with a careful eye, making sure I didn’t fall. I appreciated it.
“Yeah, I’m fine, lil man.” I climbed up to Parker’s shoulder.
“I hate seeing people hold you like that. You're alive. You’re a person.” Parker is the kind of kid who would save bugs and/or try to keep them to show me. He also loved all animals, yeah, he was that kid. And I loved him, he was basically my little brother. He saw me as a person, unlike most of the scientists here.
“Okay bud, It’s fine. That’s the only reason I’m here.”
The world saw humans as weird creatures, ever since it had been taken over by
giants. We were studied and sold. Mostly treated as one might treat rats. We were captured, trapped, and killed. I had never seen the outside world, never left this room. I was born and raised here. No matter how many times Parker had tried. Which is why I appreciated his love for animals and insects and showing me the creatures. I was stuck here, my only experience with the outside world was the young giant.
I stared at the white roof above me, like I did every night. A routine. Nothing changed. I brought my mother’s shawl over my face, inhaling the sweet, disappearing scent. I turned to the camera in the corner of the white room (not in my box), watching the blinking red light. I hummed the old tune of my mother’s song, lulling myself to sleep.
I’d never admit my dreams to anybody, they wouldn’t and couldn’t get them out of me. My dreams were horrors of human deaths. Of scientists taking worse ‘tests’ and hurting us. Them hurting Parker. Reliving my mother being taken away. And, sometimes, visions of the outside world. The sun. The grass. Animals Parker had shown me pictures of. Other humans. The worst ones were too horrifying to describe
The pitter patter of footsteps appeared in the room. Not giants though. No, these were too small. I stared at the roof for a moment.
“Hello?” I spoke first, reaching up and grabbing the bars on the top of my box. I brought myself to the hatch. I glanced up at the camera, no red light.
“Is there someone out there? If so, I’ve been taught a few ways of self defense.” And I know a giant who would do just about anything for me! I sang in my head. I swung my feet up to the bar and reached my hand through the breathing hole, pulling off the pathetic excuse for a lock.
“James? That’s your name, correct?” I froze as a human sized voice spoke from somewhere on the counter. I couldn’t see where the voice was coming from.
“Yes.” I whispered into the tense silence. “Who are you?”
“I’m Josie. There’s two more people here. I get that you don’t know us, but we’re gonna help you.”
I pushed open the hatch and pulled myself through. I walked across the clear box and looked down at the counter. I spotted the three. The first and closest was a woman, long black hair cascading over her shoulders. She had all black clothes on. The next was a younger man, he probably wasn’t much older than Lenny. He had hair that looked like it was growing from a buzz cut. He also had all black clothes on. The third, I couldn’t tell what they were. They had light brown, short cut hair. They were also wearing all black.
I jumped down from the box.
“So, what are you doing here?” I walked toward them.
“We’re gonna save you, obviously-”
“Quin! Quiet!” The guy interrupted the androgynous one.
“Both of you!” The woman, who I assumed was Josie, side-eyed the other two. “So, James. We’re gonna help you escape.”
Did I want to leave? I mean, I wanted to see the outside world, but Parker was here. Dr. Nan was here. I would miss them.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Slow down there. I live here.” I put my hands out.
“What? They’re keeping you here to study! You gotta get out of here!” Josie gestured to the giant room around us. The place I had never left. My mind just kept going back to Parker. He was a little brother to me, how could I leave him?
“No. I can’t leave. I can’t leave Parker.” I stared at the three humans in front of me.
“Parker? Who is Parker?” Josie looked around, as if looking for someone.
“My-He…He’s the son of the main scientist who takes care of me.” I looked to the ground. My first interaction with other humans and I was already blowing it.
“So he’s a giant?” Josie’s dark blue eyes coldly eyed me. I backed away a little bit.
“Yes.” I said hesitantly. The genderless one’s eyes widened. They walked closer, and I could now see that they were taller than everyone else in the room. Lanky and grinning, they spoke.
“Ahh, what was he like? I’m Quin by the way.” They tipped their head to the side. “Was he nice? Did you trust him?” Mismatched green eyes eyed me up and down.
“Quin.” Josie spoke with a warning tone.
“Alright.” Quin bowed slightly and stepped away.
“Who even are you people?” My thoughts spread into a paste with my confusion. I didn’t know these people. These were the first humans I’d ever seen (well, besides my own mother, who’d I barely known), and they were here to ‘save’ me? I didn’t think I needed saving. I had Parker and Dr. Nan, my life was good. Just the occasional student scientists manhandling me was my worst experience. Like I said before, I was lucky.
“We’re officers of the Lastregone. We save people from giants and stuff like that.” The Lenny aged guy spoke. His voice was different from mine, which I heard as he spoke more. It was similar to Quin’s, but less…R-y? I don’t know what I’m trying to convey here. They all just spoke differently.
“Introduce yourself!” Josie eyed the younger guy.
“Hello, I’m Ralph. Nice to meet you. Now, let us save you and get out of here.” He rolled his eyes and crossed his arms.
I just stood there. Did I actually want to leave? Did I need saving? My feelings were mixed in this situation. I had been here my whole life. I had-
The lights switched on, we all flinched. I sprinted backward, toward my box.
“Giant! Shoot, hide, hide!” Josie whisper-yelled. I didn’t turn back, if I was caught outside of the box…well, that would not end well for me.
“Wait, it’s me!” The door creaked open and Parker’s young voice ‘whispered’ through the night. I froze and turned around, my young, brother-like, giant friend was standing in the doorway.
“Giant!” Ralph’s voice rang through the room. “Giant, giant, giant!”
“James? James, what’s going on?” Parker walked toward me. His ears pressed back against his head, his eyebrows pinched together.
“Uh, guys, this-this is Parker. Don’t worry about him. Uh, Parks, I-just don’t worry about it.” I waved my hands at Parker.
“Ahh, so this is the Parker lad you were speaking of.” Quin stepped forward, staring up at Parker. “Hello Parker. We’re just here to save James. I am Quin.”
“Oh. Um, hi.” Parker backed away, hiding behind the spinning chair. I sighed, he’s a really shy kid.
Josie spoke next. “Parker, you better swear not to tell anyone about us.” Her tone was warning. Parker’s tail flicked nervously. I suddenly felt very protective.
“Hey, stop it! You’re scaring him!” I walked in front of Josie. I was a little bit taller than her, but only barely.
“Scaring him?! He’s the giant here!”
“Well he’s just a kid! He’s not doing anything!” I didn’t usually yell. At anyone. The most would be Lenny, because it’s Lenny.
“Josie, mate, calm down. We’re here to save James, not scare kids. You should know this.” Ralph walked up behind Josie, putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Kid or not, he’s a giant!” Josie turned to Ralph, grabbing his hand and pushing it off her shoulder.
A whimper rang from behind the chair. Parker was hiding, sniffling. I turned back to Josie.
“Shhh!” I shushed her and turned back to Parker. “Parks…come out. It’s okay. I’m here. Come here.”
“James?” His head peaked from behind the chair. His blonde hair fell in front of his eyes.
“Yeah. Yeah lil man, it’s me. I’m here. It’s fine. Come over here, give me your hand, Parks.” Parker’s whole body moved. Giants are faster and can move across large spaces very quickly. Parker is not an exception. His giant form was right in front us. Josie and Ralph ran backwards, away from Parker. I had no idea where Quin had gone. Parker audibly huffed, his breath ruffled my hair. His arm shifted and his hand rose beside me. I put my finger on his fingernail.
“See. I’m here. We’re gonna be okay.” I smiled up at him. His head came down, his nose pressed against my body, I hugged it. “Yeah lil man, you’re gonna be okay.”
Could I leave him? He needed me. I needed him. I couldn’t leave him. Even if it meant I would be with humans. He was basically my little brother, how could I do that to him? How could I abandon him-
“Oh lovely, you're acquainted with the giant!” Joise’s voice broke the silence. She sounded annoyed. I rolled my eyes.
“Bloody hell man, that scared me. But Josie, he’s just a kid. He seems nice.” Ralph spoke behind me, his voice was calm. Parker backed away, his head lifted, I let go. “Hey, Parker, that’s your name, yes?” Parker nodded. Ralph continued, “I’m Ralph. There’s no need to worry about us, mate, but, um, please be a little bit more careful. Right, you got that?” His town was gentle and welcoming, like he’d spoken to children before, younger and older.
Parker actually answered with a nod, before speaking. “Y-Yeah. I’m very sorry. I just-” He choked on his words.
“Hey, hey, don’t worry about it. I’m not mad, just spooked. Don’t mind Josie.” Ralph gave a welcoming smile. I couldn’t speak.
“Ralph.” Josie snapped. “Back off. We don’t deal with giants-” She was muffled, I turned around.
“Sorry lass, just thought he’d want you quiet.” It was Quin. They had a hand over Josie’s mouth. They smiled. “Right, continue Ralph. Don’t bite me, I’m not letting go, lassie.”
“Right. Thank you Quin.” Ralph nodded in their direction. Quin grinned back. “So, Parker, James is your…friend? Yes? I would assume this is correct, judging from the fact that we’re not dead yet and your display of affection towards him.”
Parker nodded. “Yes. That’s right.”
“Good. Okay, um, we’re trying to help James-”
“I’m standing right here.”
Ralph eyed me. “Yes and Parker, we’re trying to help him escape here.”
“But why? Why does he have to go? He’s safe. And…James, are you happy?” Parker directed his thoughts toward me. I paused. I thought I was happy here. I had Parker. Wasn’t that all I needed? That was joy I was feeling, right? I wasn’t really trapped with Parker. He was freeing, but…there was a whole world out there that I had never seen. From what Parker explained to me, the world was bigger than imaginable. For the first 15 years of my life, I was born and raised here, in a box, in a room. Never leaving.
But there might be somewhere out there…better for me.
I mean…I would miss Parker, but he had his mom. I…I could find my own family.
“I-I don’t know. There’s a whole world out there, Parks. You told me about it. And…And there might be a better place for me.” I looked away. I couldn’t bear looking him in the eye. Not this. A lump appeared in my throat. “If-If I…I’ll miss you. I have to do this.” I confirmed it for myself. I had to go. I couldn’t stay here, not forever.
I collected what little I had of belongings; a pillow, a blanket, my mother’s shawl. Honestly, I would kind of miss the stability of this place, but I wanted to meet other people and see other places.
Parker carried us out of the building. We were hidden by the scarf thing he wore around his neck. It took a while to convince Josie to even come near him, but Quin whispered something in her ear and she came right aboard. I made myself peek over the edge. I wanted to get a glimpse of the place before we left. The walls were plain gray, with doors sectioning off areas. There were signs on the doors, I couldn’t read them. I should mention that I cannot read, I was never taught or given supplies or opportunities. I did guess that there were humans in those rooms too, but I would never find out.
