klaroline + sometime around midnight - airborne toxic event

He’s never been very good at letting go.

              Klausknows this about himself.  His siblingshave hit that point home several times. He’s begun to take the hint.

              But this…this is different.  His siblings… well,they’re his blood.  No matter whathappens, there is a tie there.  ButCaroline?

              Carolineis utterly unconnected to him.

              She wasjust a pretty, enjoyable distraction. One that he knew for a mere blink of time.  The fact is, he shouldn’t even remember her.

              He’sknown others for far longer and forgotten them.

              But whenhe sees her across the street, he stops and stares.  Because there she is, and it’s been decades,but he would know that face anywhere.

              She’slaughing, and looks innocent in a sundress that shows off long legs.  He remembers those legs wrapped around hiswaist, her voice a whisper in his ear as he brought them both to climax.  Decades, and he suddenly thinks that he’snever managed to get the taste of her off of his tongue.

              Asthough she can feel his gaze, her eyes move away from her friends, and theirgazes meet.  Perhaps it’s petty, but hecan’t help but feel a thrill of victory when recognition lights her eyes.  He thinks she might come to him – she takes astep toward him – and Klaus is unsure what he’ll do when she comes.

              Kiss her?

              Turn from her?

              Take her to bed and fuck heruntil she’s either gone from his mind or permanently ingrained in his everycell?    

              But thenone of her friends – and Klaus recognizes none of them, so good for her; shegot away from Mystic Falls – says her name, and her attention is drawn away,and she’s tugged down the street.

              Shelooks back once, and Klaus raises a hand. Her lips curve into a small smile, before she disappears around thecorner.

              And isn’tit ridiculous, he thinks, that all it takes is a meeting of eyes across thestreet, and it’s as though no time has passed.

              You’re in love with me.

              It may be a curse, if this iswhat love is. Everything in him tells him to go after her, but Klaus has alwaysbeen the type to self-sabotage.  He’s notparticularly good at emotions, after all.

              It’s amistake, to turn and walk away.

              He doesit anyway.
