What if the man who figured out how to take bending away won and wiped all bending history off the planet by burning everything written? That's why no one knows about it and no one knows about him because if he became famous, then bending would be known of and people would try to bend again. So he made himself unfamous before he died.

He probably only agreed to Tonraq’s plans because he heard the horror stories of when his father was training, how there was always someone trying to kill/capture them. He just wanted to be sure the Avatar would be safe while they mastered the four elements.
