Roman:
Roman strutted throughout the halls, it was a Monday morning, but he was filled with a new energy. After having a full week to decide and plan their drama teacher would finally post the audition results today. Roman practically ran to the drama room, it was third hour, but he was in the first class of the day and his excitement had been eating him alive. He walked into the black box and heard the chatter of all the other students eagerly awaiting their results as he took his seat near the front of the room. He was confident in his audition, but he also knew that others thought the same exact thing, he left out a nervous sigh and bounced his leg to let out some of his energy. Talyn walked over to Roman,
“Are you ok? You look like your gonna pass out…” Roman jumped out of his chair and grabbed their shoulders,
“How could I possibly relax?! This is a huge moment and I can’t stop thinking about everything that I messed up on! I messed up so many things Talyn…” Talyn grabbed his shoulders and guided him back down into his seat,
“Roman…you know you did well. It was a great and solid audition. All you have to worry about is doing Bert justice when you get to play him.” Roman swallowed and nodded his head,
“Your right… Your right. I am-“ He was cut off by the bell ringing and the teacher walking into the room with a sheet of paper that everyone knew was the cast list. The teacher stood at the front of the room and shouted,
“SETTLE DOWN CLASS!” he cleared his throat and continued, “I know you are all very excited but I have announcements first. First off, I do have the cast list and you can all take a look once in done talking. Secondly, I know all of you worked very hard and everyone plays a very important role, no matter how big or small. Thirdly, please don’t trample anyone.” He tacked the list to a bulletin board behind him and he quickly moved out of the way. Everyone sprung forward at the same time and crowded around the list. Roman jumped forward with Talyn in tow but he was pushed back from the other kids rushing forward, with his view of the list blocked off.
Virgil:
Virgil was sitting to the side of the drama classroom, he was one of the few that wasn’t excited about the long-awaited results, tech didn’t leave much up to fate. Virgil also wanted to avoid the impending flood of students that was soon to come. He teacher came out and gave the usual speech, you all did well blah blah blah. Once the teacher turned and ran for his dear life. Virgil watched the rush take place as he was nearly knocked over by a passing kid. He readjusted himself and rolled his eyes. He leaned against the wall again as he overhead a kid shout excitedly,
“…you got it!”
“Are you serious?! I got it! I mean of course I got the lead, but I’m so excited!” Virgil looked up at the sound of the familiar voice and he saw none other than Roman. Virgil felt a strange jump in his chest upon seeing him. He swallowed hard and suddenly got an idea. He got off the wall and started walking towards Roman and his friend. Once he got close enough he started to walk slowly and he said to Roman,
“Congratulations on the part…” Once Roman looked up at him in shock Virgil walked towards the crowd and let himself get lost within the people, making it impossible for Roman to find him again. Virgil crossed the room and hid in the shadows, watching Roman search for him. Virgil smiled slightly to himself, when he was around Roman he weirdly felt his confidence grow stronger. He looked down, his smile fading. He shouldn’t be feeling this way…
Friday~
Roman:
Roman’s week had been wonderful. Between getting the lead part and getting to see his Cinderella again Roman was positively happy. He walked into his last class of the week, taking his seat in front of Talyn. He was unpacking his bag when Talyn taped his shoulder and said,
“Listen, there is a pier party tonight. We should go to celebrate you getting the part.” Roman nodded slowly, considering the party. He always loved pier parties. Everyone dancing in the sand, the local bands, and swimming in the ocean at midnight. Excitement filled him at the thought of a fun night. He nodded to Talyn and said,
“Of course I want to go.” Talyn smiled and said,
“It’s gonna be great.” Once 7th hour ended he rushed home to get ready for the party and to ask his parents’ permission. As he got to his front porch he saw his dad’s car in his garage. He walked inside and saw his sitting in the living room watching TV. Roman walked over to him and said,
“Hey, Dad?” His dad looked at him and said,
“What is it now?” Roman shrugged slightly and continued,
“There are some friends I want to hang out with. And I wanted to know if I could go out tonight.” Roman’s dad shrugged annoyed and said,
“I don’t care what you do. Just leave me alone.” Roman was taken aback by his dad’s words. He sighed and went upstairs. Dad must be tired after all week, that must be why he was acting so weird Roman reassured himself.
Patton:
Patton glanced out across the crowd, he was on a mission to find a certain someone. Given he was on the cheer squad he was given access the all the best parties in town. And everyone went to pier parties. Including Logan’s bully. He scanned the crowd of people all dancing to a local rock band, passing red solo cups around. Several more minutes passed until his friend Valerie came over and tugged on Patton’s sleeve,
“I found him.” Patton followed her through the crowd until they got to an edge of the pier. Patton saw the kid from last Friday night and he walked over to him and tapped him on the shoulder and shouted over the music,
“Excuse me! Are you Trevor Hall?” Trevor nodded and said,
“Yea that me. What about it?” Patton crossed his arms and said,
“If you ever come near my brother again I will make sure you regret it. Word travels fast in a high school. So, leave Logan alone!” Trevor rolled his eyes and said,
“Okay, okay this is what’s gonna happen. Your gonna turn around and leave me alone or I’m gonna make your brother’s life and yours’s hell. I’m going to keep doing what I want, you little cheer fag!” He shoved Patton causing him to fall to the ground. Trevor chuckled and turned around to walk away but he only got several steps away from Patton when Valerie stepped into his path and planted a fist into Trevor’s jaw. He stumbled back from the sudden impact and looked at Valerie in shock. Trevor rubbed jaw where a bruise was now forming and looked at Valerie angerly and said,
“What the he- “Valerie cut him off and said,
“Don’t ever call anyone that ever again! Ever! And don’t even think about going near Logan or Patton ever again or I will make your life a living hell. Like Patton said, word travels fast and I know things about you that you would hate to get out. So, I suggest that you shut up and leave before I give you some more bruises.” Trevor opened his mouth as if to say something but he decided to use his better judgment and keep quiet. He walked away, fuming at the fact that he had been put in his place. Once he was gone out of view Valerie rushed over to Patton and said,
“Are you alright?” Patton stood up and brushed sand off of himself and said,
“I am now. Where did you learn to fight like that?” Valerie shrugged,
“I’m the oldest of four siblings. Someone had to fight off all their bullies.” Patton chuckled and said,
“I hope that was enough to keep Trevor away.” Valerie said,
“If not then I can find a way to spread the word about him. He has things he wants to hide.” Patton nodded and took Valerie hand and said,
“Come on let’s go have fun.”
Virgil:
Virgil finished playing out the last few cords of the song they had just played. Virgil had been in his garage band since middle school, playing the bass. When they were asked to play for a pier party they couldn’t turn it down. Virgil had played half the night away, getting lost in the music. He wiped his brow, silently cursing the hot night. He had taken off his shirt over an hour ago, trying to stay cool. The main singer, Remy, walked over to Virgil and slapped a hand on his back,
“God this is great! I’m not gonna be able to sleep for a week!” Virgil chuckled and said,
“It is pretty great.” Remy took Virgil by the shoulders and said,
“Listen. I’m sorry for what I’m about to do…” Virgil was about to question him but Remy was already across the stage. Remy had Virgil’s shirt in hand and he went to the front of the stage they were on and shouted into the microphone,
“Who wants to play a game?!” The crowd cheered back in response and Remy continued,
“Whoever catches our bass player’s shirt gets to go on a date with him. Or a hangout, whichever way you swing.” People started cheering to have the shirt thrown to them. Virgil’s face turned bright red and he wanted to hide away but there was no turning back now. Remy sidled to the response that he was getting and he shouted,
“Here we go!” He closed his eyes and let the shirt sail over the crowd. The crowd fell silent as it flew through the air and when it landed on the lucky person the cheering started back up again. Virgil looked out across the crowd, wondering who had caught it. Several minutes passed and no one came forward, Virgil assumed that whoever had caught it just didn’t want to go on a date with him. He turned around, adjusting his guitar, getting ready to play the next song when he felt something hit him in the back. He turned around and saw no other but Roman standing there.
“Now…rocker boy. You have to give me your number.”
So my son is a little young for this but I’m really looking forward to playing our new Lost Words card game with family & friends! The game uses the same illustrations from the wonderful nature book of the same name published by the @johnmuirtrust . I love love the beautiful drawings of kingfishers, otters, brambles in the cards/ the book and I don’t mind admitting the conker spell/ poem makes me quite emotional! ⠀ In terms of gameplay, each player is given a hand of cards, and then the aim of the game is to match all your nature (picture) cards with the correct spell (or poem) cards before your opponent(s) do! We’re planning on trying to play this weekend as well as do our usual jaunt into the countryside. ⠀ ⠀ #johnmuirtrust #thelostwords #thelostwordscardgame #cardgames #rainyday #art #forestschool #nature #greenparenting #boardgames #kingfisher #kingfishersofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CHzhqYjrB5k/?igshid=1r9m3iiojix04

Thanks to one of our intrepid and insightful @cheshudinc independent sales reps, we’re introducing a new feature to our weekly Rep Newsletter that highlights the titles our reps are talking up and can’t stop talking about. The inaugural pick comes from @bookslinger401 : “Emma Mitchell is someone I've been following for some time now on Twitter and Instagram and has great levels of engagement on both platforms. This unique book goes deeper than the 'forest bathing' trend, combining her personal experience and current research at how exposure to nature—in all forms—can bring about improved mental and physical health. Filled with beautiful illustrations and examples of her art with natural elements, the book feels super timely and sits at the nexus of the decluttering (a la #mariekondo), digital break movements (a la #howtobreakupwithyourphone ), and the continued rising awareness of nature deprivation in children (a la #thelostwords ) does to our collective understanding of the world around us.” ・・・ Repost @silverpebble2 ・・・ • The Wild Remedy • This is my second book, a fully illustrated diary of my nature walks throughout a year, in the wood behind our cottage, on a Pembrokeshire beach and in an untouched wildflower meadow in Derbyshire. It is not only a diary of the wildlife I encounter though, it is a candid account of my mental health and how each step I take among trees and plants, each sighting of a gold crest or moment spent among wild bluebells helps to lift my spirits on difficult days. As a scientist I was interested in *how* nature can mend us: the mechanisms by which wild landscapes affect our bodies and minds and can be truly medicinal. My hope is that this book might encourage more people to take even short walks outside and to reconnect a little with nature. It really does help on the dark days. It is full of my paintings, drawings, photographs and calligraphy, so that if you’re having a stressful time then curling up and simply looking at the pictures may help.
