It didn't make sense to him that Wylan stopped attending their library meetings. They were starting to become friends he was sure of it. So why did he vanish?

Not too long after their last meeting, he heard that Van Eck had sent his son to a music school in Belendt. Given his talent with music, it would make sense but... Why hadn't Wylan said goodbye to him? He was kind and Elio was sure he wouldn't leave without saying anything even if it was just a note or a phone call.. Something...

And that was how he found himself wandering around the city, going further than he had ever gone before in the hope of getting an answer. This part of Ketterdam definitely was what his parents had warned him about. People begging for money, one bar after another, another brothel. Soon he found himself lost in the unfamiliar streets and then of course to top it all off he found himself cornered in an alleyway by someone trying to rob him.

"You can have everything I have on me!" Elio exclaimed with an unsteady voice while his trembling hand reached out to get his wallet. "Really there's no need for violence... "

"I invest in one-of-a-kind, not in 'new talent', Wylan. The Dregs aren't a charity for every barrel rat who thinks they could potentially become something someday." Wylan wasn't the first person to forget about that. Ever since he'd convinced Per Haskell to pay off Inej's indenture, Kaz has had plenty of visits from others thinking they were special, and wanting to join the Dregs — for a certain price. And the Bastard of the Barrel was more than happy to put them in their place before sending them on their way.

Yes, Wylan had talent. And perhaps giving him such a hard time about his demolition work being mediocre at best might've been Kaz's way to try and push him to do even better, but it just wasn't enough to justify an expense like that. Not when there were so many other things he could invest in that would be far more profitable. Saints, the Slat could use an overhaul as well. Then, of course, there was the fact that Wylan's demolition work was barely the reason he kept him around, to begin with.

"You talk about ideas, and things that should remain hidden from our rivals, but I have yet to see any of it. You might have a point about Raske, but everything you've demonstrated so far has been no better than your run of the mill demolition work, either. Bet I could concoct it myself, after reading the instructions."

Kaz fell silent for a moment, the gears in his brain turning and working relentlessly. "Prove it. Bring me something that can convince Per Haskell you deserve a workspace of your own. Something that'll convince me you're worth the investment."

she'd only just released her fist, hand falling loosely to her side when she heard a voice from behind her. vasilissa took a deep breath as she turned around. could nothing be simple? of course not, nothing was simple in ketterdam not even money. what was supposed to be easy was now complicated by a witness.

"no, of course not." there was a body behind her, lungs filled with water. "what makes you think that?" she stepped away from the man, a drunk with a thick beard and the ugliest green waistcoat she'd ever seen. vasilissa took in the kid. he didn't look like much, but she knew better than to underestimate someone.

vasilissa walked toward him, practically daring him to look past her. "why? did you see something?"

the art room on the second floor had always garnered a lot of curious attention from the little goat . he’d often loaf about and watch as wylan or his mother painted . today, upon inspection, there was no one inside, and milo saw an opportunity in the making !

give or take an hour later, the little goat had knocked over a canvas, and tromped all over it with different colored paints . yet somehow he had managed not to get any on the wall or other work in progresses . bleating happily, tail waggity wagging, the now paint colored hooved goat trotted out the door of the room and bleated loudly for wylan . or jesper . or marya . whoever was home, he hoped to share his creation, even if he might get in trouble .

"you did know that you're the bait here?" why in saints name did kaz decide to include wylan in their job this time was beyond her. she could only suppose that he did make for a very convincing clueless mark; which they did need for this job to sell the heist. there was something far too young and sweet about the boy who couldn't be any younger than jesper. in truth, there was something about him that gnawed at her heart to warn him. maybe it was the glimmer of light in his eyes- or hope, that made her tell him the truth.

kaz always kept motives enshrined in shadows, where she worked best, but it didn't mean she wanted to always live in them or live by them. she had a feeling that life wouldn't suit wylan for long either. "just do what kaz said and stay out of the way."

“I’ll always take the time if you need me.” Wylan’s part of the group now, and that’s enough for Inej to make him a priority over all else. She’d admittedly been a little surprised when Wylan had asked her to talk, but she was glad for it. Every ounce of trust she received from her fellow Crows was a cherished gift, more valuable than any amount of money.

❝ If you think Mr. Brekker will be of any help, I'd consider it again. He might have lucked out in escaping me once, but I cannot say it will happen again. And you? I don't think you're nearly as fortunate as the so-called Bastard of the Barrel. ❞

The Darkling stepped closer, closing what distance still separated him from Wylan, and the shadows thickened around him, his hands already preparing to raise...
