@papercrowns on twitter has started translating the Notes from MOTS:Persona. I can’t wait to read through them all! This first one references Seokjin’s father who seems to have been a time traveler himself in his school days, trying (and failing?) to save his own friends. (See previous album notes - papercrowns has a dropbox with all of them. Buy her a ko-fi for all her hard work!)

The painting in his study is almost certainly Géricault’s famous Raft of the Medusa.

ผมถอดรองเท้า โยนกระเป๋าแล้วเข้าไปในห้อง พ่ออยู่ข้างในนั้น ผมไม่ได้คิดด้วยซ้ำว่านานแค่ไหนหรือว่าไปไหนมา ผมแค่วิ่งเข้าไปในอ้อมกอดของพ่ออย่างไม่คิดอะไร ผมจำเหตุการณ์ต่อจากนั้นไม่ค่อยได้นัก สิ่งแรกคือกลิ่นเหล้า คำด่าทอ หรือแรงตบที่แก้มกันแน่ ผมไม่รู้เลยว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้น กลิ่นเหล้า ลมหายใจติดขัด และกลิ่นปาก ดวงตาแดงก่ำ และหนวดเคราหยาบกร้าน เขาตบผมด้วยมือใหญ่ ๆ ถามว่าผมมองอะไรแล้วก็ตบผมอีก ยกผมขึ้นลอยกลางอากาศ ดวงตาแดงก่ำน่ากลัวแต่ผมกลัวเกินกว่าจะร้องไห้ออกมา ไม่ใช่พ่อ ไม่สิ นั่นแหละเขา แต่ก็ไม่ใช่เขา สองเท้าของผมแกว่งกลางอากาศ จากนั้นศีรษะก็กระแทกกับผนังและพลิกคว่ำลงบนพื้น รู้สึกราวกับหัวจะระเบิด ภาพตรงหน้าริบหรี่และไม่ช้าก็มืดสนิท สิ่งที่เหลืออยู่ในหัวคือเสียงกระหืดกระหอบของพ่อ

ผมกำลังนับเลขถึงสี่ ตอนที่ได้ยินเสียงหัวเราะดังแว่วมา จากนั้นตัวผมในวัยเด็กก็กำลังจับมือใครบางคนผ่านไป ผมรีบหันไปมองแต่ตรงนั้นกลับมีแค่เพื่อนร่วมชั้นกำลังจ้องมองผม “โฮซอกจ๊ะ” คุณครูเรียกชื่อผม ตอนนั้นเองที่ผมตระหนักได้ว่าตัวเองอยู่ที่ไหน เป็นคาบเรียนคณิตศาสตร์ กำลังนับรูปผลไม้ในหนังสือเรียน ห้า, หก ผมนับอีกครั้ง แต่ยิ่งจำนวนเยอะขึ้นเท่าไหร่ เสียงของผมก็ยิ่งสั่นและมือก็เริ่มชื้นเหงื่อ เอาแต่นึกถึงความทรงจำในตอนนั้นไม่หยุด

ผมจำหน้าแม่ไม่ค่อยได้ตั้งแต่วันนั้น จำได้แค่ว่าเธอยื่นช็อกโกแลตแท่งให้ผมตอนกำลังเที่ยวสวนสนุก “โฮซอกจ๊ะ นับถึงสิบแล้วค่อยลืมตานะ” หลังจากที่นับครบแล้วลืมตาขึ้น แม่ก็ไม่อยู่แล้ว ผมรอแล้วรออีกแต่เธอก็ไม่กลับมา ผมนับจนถึงเก้าเป็นเลขสุดท้าย ผมจะนับต่อแต่เสียงกลับไม่ออกมา ผมหูอื้อแล้วรอบตัวก็เริ่มพร่าเลือน คุณครูส่งท่าทางให้ผมนับต่อ เพื่อน ๆ จ้องมองมาที่ผม ผมจำหน้าแม่ไม่ค่อยได้ ผมรู้สึกว่าถ้าหากผมนับต่อ เธอจะไม่มีวันกลับมาหาผมอีก

ผมทิ้งตัวล้มลงบนพื้น
