There’s this spot, this old spot, that Danny and I walk past every night on our way back from the Salem YMCA. Every time we walk past, one of us says, “Hey we should check that place out sometime.” Then, invariably, the other one of us responds, “The Old Spot? Sure.” Well last Friday night we tried it out.
It was good. Unfortunately though, I did not like anything that I ordered. The beer I had tasted too much like a beer and not enough like not a beer. My entrée, a pork sammie, was prepared in a different manner than I expected and had too many pickles on it. And, my French fries were of the sweet potato variety. In summation, all of it needs to be scrapped for the next time I go. But, despite this experience, there absolutely will be a ‘next time I go’. That’s because I see great potential in the place. It’s like a movie director whose future work you’re really excited about even though this movie was a giant personal flop for you. What I’m saying is I’m not going for their pork sammie again, but I will be back.
Anyway, we got to the Old Spot about 8 pm and went to the hostess for a table. She informed us that the wait would be thirty minutes but that we were welcome to sit by the bar if we could find a table there instead. So, that’s what we did. We vultured a table in the bar section of the restaurant. From the menu I ordered a pork sammie, which I thought would be a delicious pulled pork sandwich. As hinted at above, that’s not exactly how it turned out. For drinks, Danny spotted a deal called the Mystery Can Grab. It was $1.50 so we ordered that. I anticipated that deal meant the waiter would just grab something at random from behind the bar and we would have to pay $1.50 for said item. In actuality the waiter came out with a bucket and we, the customers, were responsible to grab a mystery can. It was essentially bobbing for apples, but at a bar. And instead of water, apples, and your mouth, the necessary requirements for a successful Mystery Can Grab are ice, cans of beer, and your hand.
In part, I plan to go back because I really liked the waiter. I felt like he was doing a Kyle Kinane impression the entire night and he killed at it. The beard, his body shape, the rhythm in which he talked, all of this was spot on at The Old Spot. I’m not entirely convinced the waiter wasn’t Kyle Kinane himself half-assedly trying to convince people he isn’t Kyle Kinane. Whichever way it was, it made for a more interesting meal.
But, like I said, I didn’t enjoy my meal. It wasn’t that it was bad. It was just not to my liking. I’m excited to go back, and to keep going back until I find my ‘go to’ on the menu. After which point I will be able to enjoy might-be-Kyle-Kinane’s company and I’ll be assured of a delicious meal at the same time.
P.S. The Mystery Can Grab is an awesome idea.
