Good post, OP. I'd like to add in some places teaching requires a second degree (either one you take concurrently with your degree that becomes your teachables, or one you take AFTER you finished your first bachelor's. So it's a double fuck you in debt there, and like you said there's no guarantee.) I have a fine arts degree, so, I hear you.
Check with the state/county/province (who ever does the certifying) to find out exactly what you need. Not the university education department. This is one thing I doubt that’s changed since I was in school. The education department was “oh, you need this list of courses to complete a degree in education.” The county office looked at my transcripts, pulled out their list and circled 4 courses I had to take for certification.
Now mind you, the certification was to teach English at a high school level. Not elementary school. That was a whole different set of classes. And you’ll likely have to pay to take the teaching exam at some point. And do most of this before you can even seriously apply for a job. So unless you really want to teach, I don’t recommend it.
