Theoreme, “Moyen Age” from L'appel du Midi à Midi Pile (2016)

Some real brain-benders coming outta France lately: recent records by Heimat, Badaboum, and now, sauntering in through the exit and slowly taking over the PA, there is Theoreme, nom de plume of one Maissa D. L'appel du Midi à Midi Pile packs a heavy industrial/dub thump within its buzzing folds, harkening back to a time when (I assume) “post-punk” actually meant something. Tracks like ”Rave Party” and “Moyen Age,” above, are all suspense and corrosion, sharp stabs of sound keeping your feet firmly against the fire. It’s a small bit of deception to have the creeping "Moyen Age” be the publicly available song, because more often than not, this thing knocks - pull out “Leader des Serveurs” or “Punk Vortex,” watch the bodies flail. I’d even argue that there’s a hip-hop influence in Maissa’s delivery on “De la Cote de L’azur”: body music made by the ghosts in the machines. A lot of artists going for this sound leave it too spare, too mechanized, and end up sounding alike; Theoreme has crafted a rich record here, a plush cushion of typically cold sounds to be settled into, or torn apart and thrown about like confetti. I figure Theoreme’d prefer the latter.

Bruit Direct Disques is responsible for L'appel du Midi à Midi Pile, Theoreme’s gem of a debut LP. Statesiders should look to Forced Exposure or Tedium House for physical copies (soon). The one-sheet says “continu[ing] down the path of no-fucks-given”; follow your nose.
