Thanks to my job, we wound up seeing Blondie on the closing night of their tour. Debbie Harry may be 77, but she’s still the punk chick next door. Not only can she still sing, she had that audience in the palm of her hand for nearly two hours, helped in part by a crack band behind her, with true old-school guitar histrionics by Tommy Kessler, original pounder Clem Burke on drums, and none other than Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols paying the bills by sitting in on bass for the tour. That meant folks paying attention could catch strains of “Anarchy in the UK” craftily dropped into the tail end of “Heart of Glass” (along with Donna Summer’s equally influential “I Feel Love”). Debbie’s foil, Chris Stein, sat this tour out, but they’ve been recording a new album, the two have a co-book tour of the UK shortly, their latest box set came out last week, and there’s other news in the Blondie camp coming up, I’m told. Mrs. Vinyl Answer got into mischief before the show while I talked with the crew (see photos) and, showing my age, one of my favorite things about the evening was that we got to park in the production parking lot behind the venue instead of having to search all over town for a mythical empty spot on the street. Not a bad Thursday night!
