A piece of production art from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is coming up for sale, and something about it struck me.
It appears as if the roots of the tree are reaching out to grab Grimhilde, claim her life-force. It’s almost as if it’s echoing the forest scene below...except, where Snow White was set up to die- left alone in the wilderness after nearly being stabbed in the heart by an expert Huntsman- with all odds against her, she managed to survive the elements of nature, the cruelty of the wild and a ascend up past the gates of metaphorical hell. The spirit within her is so strong, it’s almost like an exemplum of the notion that true life can never be destroyed.
On the other hand, where the Forest of Fear only served as a development point for Snow White’s journey, it seemed to signal the end of Grimhilde’s- in the film, at least. The elements seem angry with the Queen, and it wouldn’t be hard to deduce why. The havoc she’s set forth upon the kingdom, the murder she just inflicted upon Snow White- whose life is canonically valuable beyond measure, and even the fact that she robs the earth of its riches for her self-serving magical potions makes it all the more understandable why the earth would want to set her back and make her assume her place in the natural order of things.
