Releasing a game in development into the relative wild is a splendid adventure. Last week, we put the Epsilon release of Susurrus: Season of Tides into the hands of a select group for testing, people we picked for their love of story games, literary chops, and full willingness to tear gaping, nightmarish wounds in our egos. Luckily, we have several egos and can afford for a couple to bleed out. (The cleaning bills are hell, however.)

In all seriousness, this early testing period is fascinating, and invaluable. The game promises to be a broad and deep field of branching story possibilities, but of course, at the moment, there aren’t nearly as many as there will ultimately be, which currently leaves players hanging. We have gorgeous portrait art from Duncan Eagleson, but once in a while the engine decides to show those portraits really tiny. This has resulted in our lead writer coining the term “zombini.” (Which sounds like a really bad pasta. But we digress.) The point is, the thing is a collection of interlinked stories and characters and art, but it isn’t quite a game just yet.

It is a curious process to see where a story-driven game tips over from a collection of encounters into a fully realized world. As in the development of a novel, for a time there are only characters, and perhaps a place or two; then there are conversations between characters; then things start happening to characters…the component parts, each separately and iteratively imagined, tend to coalesce into a tangible, believable world in a way that feels mysterious, even when you are the creator of that world. You tinker and expand and imagine, and one day, suddenly, there’s a there there.

In Susurrus, you begin in a city, and as you progress, there are more and more places in that city that you can visit and revisit. But we are still working toward the time when the totality of those places feels like an actual city. That tipping point is fast approaching, but, as with so many tipping points, it’s impossible to say exactly where it will be.

Each week, our Epsilon testers are receiving new content along with their bug fixes, and the world slowly expands. As it does, its aliveness increases. The cracks in the sidewalks start to show. The back alleys take on an odor; the fog in the park feels cool against our ankles. And here in our underground office, we tap away toward the day when the work becomes a world.

we've actually heard carlos sing a couple times, in the "isn't she lovely" video (MY GOD i'm addicted to it), in the interview with him, Ali, and AJ, and in Charlene Kaye's Animal Love 1 acoustic version :D (in case you wanted to look those up) ;)
