Fighting off those summer blues
Does the thought of summer depress you because your friends actually have things to do but you don’t? Maybe you don’t like going out because sweating is a thing? I got you fam.
So there are a million other posts like this, so similarities are inevitable. Others also probably have better advice. But I want to try and make a list of things that hopefully will make a boring summer more bearable.
1. Finding a job? In this economy?
I do suggest actively trying to find a job, less boredom + more money = win-win. I know it sounds like the most obvious answer but hey, if you need motivation to look for a job, here it is. I don’t think I have to list the benefits of having a job, although you might have less time to dedicate to hobbies or summer studying or whatever you wanted to do with your summer. But hey, you get to socialise on the job too so that’s pretty rad sometimes. The tips after this are pretty much in case job-hunting fails. But hey, if you can handle more than a summer job, you do you
2. Volunteering
Finding somewhere close to home where to volunteer is also an option. You do unfortunately have to leave your house, but it’s a v rewarding feeling (+looks good on that CV)
3. Take up some online courses?
Do you ever feel like you’re going straight into a dead end because of your degree? Me too! So why not take up some totally unrelated classes over the summer to get your mind off of what you study throughout the rest of they year + expand your knowledge on more things in life + you have a wider variety of jobs to choose from in the future. You could learn a new language, in my country at least there are plenty of over the summer kinda courses, which definitely fill up the time. There are multiple masterposts throughout tumblr with links and ideas which follow up on this point. There are many more but I’m tired so maybe I’ll find more later and add them in.
4. Exercise!
I’ll be real with you, I’ve hated exercise for my whole life. BUT recently I started pushing myself to actually go walking/kinda jogging? and exercising after and honestly it feels really refreshing? In order to enjoy exercising you might have to find it within you to actually enjoy it, instead of thinking that you’re forcing yourself because you’re trying to lose weight or gain muscle.
5. Find a new hobby?
So this is a little tough to do I feel you. But when your summer is boring and you have nothing to do, it is your time to try new things, or focus on stuff which you couldn’t focus on because school kept you busy (Example: University made me too tired to do anything with my life throughout the school year so I dropped writing, but now when my inspiration comes back from the war, I’m more than happy to get back into it!). You could try creating a game or try some arts/crafts (pinterest is great for diy stuff too). The world is your oyster so just try stuff and expand your horizons.
6. Get off the internet every once in a while.
At this point this is really just life advice. Like sometimes you gotta disconnect, grab a book, grab a drink and just sit in a comfortable spot (or go out to a cafe or a park or something similar) to just unwind. Relax your brain and focus on the book in front of you. If you don’t feel like reading, do some art, your style. Doesn’t have to be good, just draw and spend some quality quiet time with yourself.
7. If you have anything that you need to get done,try to start early. You deserve a break don’t get me wrong, but if you have school work over the summer/ research that needs to be done, just get to it before it’s too late. You have plenty of time so make the best out of it.
So this is my bit in terms of suggestions. Summer, without finding a job can be pretty boring, but you can always find things to do. Don’t let it get you down, use that time to better yourself!
