Nothing quite like waking up to an AI scam comment on my fic so lazy they forgot to remove the prompt. Like, babes, you ain't slick.

What really pisses me off is that the comment did actually include details from my fic; the genre, some of the themes. Which means some arsehole fed my work through AI just so they could make a shitty attempt at trying to scam me. What a fucking loser!

What is Bluesky?

it’s a social media site that’s owned by no single person or company. it's aim is to bring back the early days of twitter before bots, elon musk or algorithms took over. Personally I find the site really cozy, wholesome, and engaging. my Bluesky account for example

What’s unique about Bluesky?

→ CUSTOMIZATION: ‎‎‎‎‎‎‎‎your timeline is very easy to control. There’s tons of options, so be sure to go through each tab in your settings. some options include: turning off autoplay, changing the order in which threaded replies show, changing DM settings, content preferences and lots of visual app settings.

→ MODERATION LISTS: human made, mass blocklists. These are public lists of accounts that when you subscribe to you automatically block or mute everyone in that specific blocklist. A great way to avoid unwanted content, and interactions. ✦ Moderation lists I recommend will be below the cut

→ STARTER PACKS: recommendation lists on who to follow, made by users. You can even curate your own starter pack of recommendations! ✦ Starter pack recommendations will be below the cut

→ FEEDS: public timelines, basically. There are a lot of feeds you can join, or you can even create your own. I made a feed featuring just my pixel art so it doesn’t get cluttered with text posts or other photos in my media tab. ✦ I’ll post feeds I recommend below and link you to a tutorial on how to create your own feed

→ BLOCKING/MUTING: bluesky has a great blocking system. When you block someone they can no longer see, or interact with you. They also have a feature to make your blog inaccessible unless logged in. you can also mute specific people, delete post replies, and even detach your post from a reblog. You can also mute specific words, phrases, tags etc.

→ NSFW: bluesky allows NSFW content, including artwork, porn, lewds etc. They also have a great moderation page to avoid the content completely, censor the content, or show it if you’d wish. ✦ just go to settings > moderation > toggle on NSFW settings and it’ll let you heavily moderate.

→ LABELS: this is a really cool feature on the site, you can subscribe to certain pages that enable a lot of fun/useful labels that help you in different ways! (like pronoun tags, artist tags etc) ✦ Labels to browse will be posted below

→ COMMUNITIES: the vastly diverse communities really feel like the best parts of tumblr. since you can so heavily curate your experience, it can really feel like a calming oasis. Mine is mostly artists, and other creatives.

there’s also a large community of professional artists, art directors, authors, celebrities, and even the best shitposters from twitter. the app really is what you make of it but it’s thriving right now.

Heads up to my fellow AO3ians, I got a scam comment from an account with the name "Katherine305" that read as follows:

Would you be interested in discussing that idea? I'm a paid artist with friendly rates, and I love bringing stories to life through visuals. I'd be excited to take your story to the next level! This art scam has been going around a while, but in case you are not aware: while some fanartists do commissions, it is Not Normal to cold call in AO3 comments asking someone if they'd like to buy art of their fic. Number one, it's kind of gauche to say you want to do fanart of someone's work but only if it's paid work completely unprompted, but number two, and more importantly, "promotion, solicitation, and advertisement of commercial products or activities" are against the AO3 Terms of Service.

If you get a comment like this, my advice is to delete it and block the account. You could also submit an abuse report, but I didn't bother because I figured that these scammers are spamming the same comment multiple times and someone else probably had reported the account already. Your call if it happens to you though.

I know the fake “beta readers” can get funny after a point like yeah no sh!t Sherlock, the scripts are obvious, the copy-paste compliments are embarrassing, we all get a laugh out of clocking them in public.

But I’m gonna be real... I’ll never forgive how this shit poisons the well.

Because now every time someone genuinely reaches out? Every time someone is actually interested, actually kind, actually normal? My first instinct is side-eye. Suspicion. Waiting for the pivot. Waiting for the “so can we DM?” like it’s a jumpscare. I am immediately checking their profiles, their likes, their following. I am also checking if they have scammy like posts or shared some. I am immediately screenshotting the profiles and everything I can find.

And that sucks.

It sucks that people who do mean well get second-guessed because of you scammers. It sucks that newer writers (and also veteran ones), who should be excited to share their work and connect, are instead being trained to be paranoid from the jump. It sucks that the default reaction is no longer “oh that’s nice” but “okay where’s the catch.”

You didn’t just make yourselves obvious, scammies. You made everyone else harder to trust.

That’s vile.

Congrats on your little scripts and your recycled lines, but what you’re really doing is eroding basic trust in creative spaces, especially for smaller authors who don’t have the experience yet to tell the difference.

Sometimes it’s funny to laugh in scammies faces, to send a witty answer back or snap at them in the comments or dms.

But most of the time? It’s exhausting. And it’s gross. And I am tired of questionning everyone coming onto my account and my posts.

oh no! the tulpar crew receives a scam phonecall!

Curly is so zonked, just so completely mentally checked out of life, that he politely goes through the scam and ends up losing 3500 credits. Feels wrong the whole way through, but it wouldn’t be the first time he’s forgotten ordering a package, and its only after he’s standing in front of the SpaceCoin ATM with that confirmation receipt in hand that the reality hits him.

Jimmy is mostly savvy to the ways of the scammers, though. He’s the type to say “go fuck yourself, scammer” and hang up. But a particularly sophisticated scam might rope him in for a long and frustrating conversation. And Jimmy’s an abrasive guy, especially when he’s frustrated, so it’s just two dudes getting more and more angry at each other until Jimmy gets asked to go to the SpaceCoin ATM and it all finally clicks. And he is so HUMILIATED that he was had that he fucking rages an incomprehensible string of insults on the scammer before hanging up and like, punching the wall.

Anya gets the call and catches on fast. She doesn’t entertain it. Click. She doesn’t have time for this shit.

Swansea is a scambaiter supreme. He gets the call and calculates how much time in his schedule he can devote to fucking with these people. He’s GOOD. He’s got the perfect combination of wit and creativity and old man voice to string the scammers along for HOURS and anger them to tears. He’s got such a colourful and creative vocabulary, he’s HILARIOUS with it, the man should start a youtube channel.

Daisuke’s grandma got scammed out of a lot of money by these people, so he feels very strongly about the amorality of scamming, and he would like to think he’s got a keen eye for that shit. Really, though, the only thing saving him from being strung along is the fact that he doesn’t pick up his damn phone. He thinks “if it’s important, they’ll text or leave a message. Hopefully text.” If he picked up, it wouldn’t take a particularly skilled or surreptitious scammer to hook him. Much like Jimmy, though, he would wizen up once asked to transfer 4000 credits worth of SpaceCoin to some unknown account.
