Seven Sentence Sunday
Tagged by the bestie @flyinghome-againstthewind to do a little seven sentence Sunday. 💖
This is definitely more than seven sentences but 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️. (A Little Longer) Where You Are aka The Vet Fic is a slow burn because I cannot write anything succinctly so this bit will either be in chapter 8 or chapter 9.
Jamie laughed. A real laugh that loosened the tense muscles in his shoulders and breathed life into his body. There were so few true moments of laughter lately, he realized, and the feeling of ease and joy now in his body was a reminder that he needed to do it more.
Just as he and Ian were getting back to work, reviewing a few small medical needs in their sheep flock, Jamie’s phone pinged with a text message. It was from Claire, and before he even had the chance to read it, Ian asked, “And just what has ye grinning like an idiot at yer phone?”
Was he blushing? His face felt warmer than it had a minute ago. Why did he feel flustered and tongue tied?
“Ach, it’s nothing. Just a vet friend checking-in or asking something. I can look at it later,” Jamie said rapidly, putting his phone face down on the desk next to him, despite it pinging again and his hand reflexively going to pick it up again.
Ian looked at him intently, clearly not buying Jamie’s story. “Who is this friend? Do I know them?”
“Nay. Tis a more recent acquaintance. We met a few months ago,” Jamie answered vaguely, not really sure why he didn’t want to tell Ian about Claire.
“I’m not going tae push ye on it, mate, but just ken I am suspicious. I dinna think most people go all googly eyed when they get a text from a work acquaintance.”
wip sentences monday
The great and good @flyinghome-againstthewind has, in the last two weeks, tagged me twice to share some snippets of my WIP, and nothing but laziness has stopped me. So this is a hybrid seven sentence Sunday and wip Saturday I am calling wip sentences Monday.😆
I AM writing! I know I promised a new story in January-ish but life had some other plans to start 2026, but I am still plodding along on my OL vet fic story when time allows. I'll start posting eventually and it should be sooner rather than later.
For now, enjoy this small excerpt. For reference, Honey is Claire's dog, and Jamie and Claire are texting about a dog they helped the day before. They only just exchanged phone numbers, thus the "unknown number" name on the texts. Enjoy! ❤️🐶
When her phone vibrated against her desk just a minute later, Claire snatched it back up, thinking Jamie had already sent a reply. Instead, it was just a reminder text from the library that her checked out books were due back in two days. She spent the remainder of the afternoon frequently checking her phone, trying to ignore the increasing feeling of disappointment and, for some reason, embarrassment, that filled her every time she saw that he had not replied. He was probably just busy, Claire reasoned with herself. He had no obligation to respond, she reminded herself. And why did she even care that he did reply? They were barely even acquaintances. So when her phone vibrated with a message hours later, as she and Honey were snuggled in bed, Honey’s snores lulling Claire to sleep as she was reading, Claire did not expect to see a message from Jamie. 10:12pm, Unknown Number: <<I’m so glad to hear our girl is doing okay. I was thinking of her all day and am grateful for your text. It has eased my mind.>> 10:13pm, Unknown Number: <<sorry for the late text. I was swamped with things to catch up on today and wanted to make sure I didn’t reply with a hasty ‘thanks for letting me know’ and nothing else.>> 10:15pm, Unknown Number: <<It was a pleasure to see you in action, Dr. Beauchamp. Now that I have your number would it be okay if I occasionally reached out for a second opinion if I need one?>> Claire bit back a smile as she read his texts. Maybe their first encounter really was an anomaly.
