Musical Monday

Hello and welcome to the end of the beginning of the week. This week’s highlighted musical is one that many people are dedicated to, and I mean DEDICATED to. It is one of the few, if only, Broadway musicals which had a same-title musical Off-Broadway running at the same time. However, the one being highlighted this week is the one that made it to Broadway and received some Tony-nominated love. Let’s get our best duds on take a gander at this gem of a musical!

Musical: The Wild Party

Book, Music, and Lyrics: Michael John LaChiusa and George C. Wolfe, Michael John LaChiusa, and Michael John LaChiusa

Broadway Run: April 13, 2000 - June 11, 2000

Awards Won: 2000 Theatre World Award (Toni Collette)

Other: The Wild Party received 8 Tony nominations, including Best Book of a Musical and 3 acting nominations for Mandy Patinkin (Best Actor in a Musical), Best Actress in a Musical (Toni Collette), and Eartha Kitt (Best Featured Actress in a Musical).

Fun Fact: The Broadway cast, of this incarnation of The Wild Party, included such stalwart names as Mandy Patinkin (Burrs), Toni Collette, in her Broadway debut (Queenie), Eartha Kitt (Dolores), Leah Hocking (Mae), Marc Kudisch (Jackie), Adam Grupper (Gold), Tonya Pinkins (Kate), and Norm Lewis (Eddie Mackrel).

Not only did it a post a goose egg for the Tony Awards, but it is also the second-most popular version of The Wild Party, at least when done regionally. However, with LaChiusa and Wolfe as your creative names, how can you go wrong?
