I really enjoyed the research into this one and especially the idea that the Grimms included a few fairy tales of this type in their collection because it spoke to their own strong feelings about family loyalty and connectedness through adversity and separation. Interestingly, the Hans Christian Andersen version of this fairy tale is the only one I’ve found where the girl has to make the shirts from nettles and he details the pain it causes her. Most have her making them from star wort, asters or thistle down.

Just look at @torbooks gorgeous reissue of Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest. You all know how I feel about this medieval Celtic retelling of the Six Swans fairy tale. Finest, finest kind.
