The Six Swans. I started picking at this drawing when I was a teenager, set it aside and finished it some years later. I kept meaning to do a graphic novel version of this story at some point, but maybe an illustrated version would serve just as well. I sold this many years ago for a price that was very low, back when my art wasn't worth nearly as much, and it kinda makes me want to faint when I think what it went for. I took most of my art off the market for awhile and didn't start offering it back up for sale again until around 2014, which made a huge difference. I could certainly do a lot better with this piece today, and hope to do a new version before I miss my chance. Pencil.

You would not be allowed to speak or to laugh for six years, and in that time you would have to sew together six little shirts from asters for us.’ An illustration of 'The Six Swans’, another belated Kickstarter commission. I really enjoyed the research into this one and especially the idea that the Grimms included a few fairy tales of this type in their collection because it spoke to their own strong feelings about family loyalty and connectedness through adversity and separation. Interestingly, the Hans Christian Andersen version of this fairy tale is the only one I’ve found where the girl has to make the shirts from nettles and he details the pain it causes her. Most have her making them from star wort, asters or thistle down.

Just look at @torbooks gorgeous reissue of Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest. You all know how I feel about this medieval Celtic retelling of the Six Swans fairy tale. Finest, finest kind. I’ve recommended it countless times, and my original copy is literally held together with tape.
