14 Days of Storybible

Here we go, friends!

Starting this Wednesday, the 19th of January and ending on the 2nd of February, we’ll develop a storybible.

As some of you already know, I’m not much of a planner myself, so don’t fear, I’m not going to make you fill in some super detailed spreadsheet. The idea is that I pose a question every day about your world or your characters, and you write down some notes.

Where you write this down is up to you. You could use an actual journal, made of paper and stuff, you could use a notes app, a spreadsheet, or just a plain document in whatever program you like to use.

I would suggest that you use this with a fresh WIP, a story that you haven’t fully developed yet, just started, or maybe not even have a real idea about, yet.

The storybible we’ll develop, will be the basis for the next WIP project in March, when we’ll WRITE and FINISH the story in 60 days!! It will be done! It will be messy and ugly, and it will need massive revisions, but it will be done!

100 Days of Writing

Recently, I noticed my writing friends dropping away. They don’t talk about their stories anymore, they aren’t posting snippets anymore, they don’t talk about this great idea they just had under the shower. And somehow they don’t seem to write as much anymore.

And I get it, you know? We’re all busy. Life doesn’t wait for the muse to come around and we all got some sort of pandemic trauma. But there’s a thing I noticed recently in that I write more if I talk about writing and when I don’t talk about it, I kind of lose the drive. Does that make sense?

So here’s what I’m proposing for one hundred days, starting on June the 1st.

We write. Duh, of course. But I don’t want us to get stuck on wordcounts. Writing is not just about the amount of words we throw on the page, writing is also about developing the story further, the characters, worldbuilding, themes, and all these intangible things.

For 100 days, every day, you write about something that pertains to your stories. It can be about what you wrote of course, maybe a snippet you really liked. But it can also be about a song that fits so well, a faceclaim, a worldbuilding idea you had. It doesn’t have to be long, but it has to be every day.

Yes, I’m dialing up the pressure! I want you to think “oh, I can write about this today on my 100daysofwriting post!” or maybe “oh shit, I need to find something to show for my 100daysofwriting post!”.

Every day. For one hundred days. Write about your writing.

I’m basing this event around this tumblr. Mention this blog (the-wip-project) and use the tag #100daysofwriting so that I and everyone else can see it.

You can make your posts anywhere, of course, I just find it easier to interact with posts here. If you post on a blog or on twitter or anywhere else, maybe you can make tumblr post to link to it? This event is mostly for yourself and if you want to write in your personal journal you are not obligated to share that with anyone. Maybe you see me in a chat somewhere and rather want to write there, that’s fine too.

I hope that talking/chatting/posting about writing will be its own fountain of inspiration.

This was a super helpful prompt! I realized that character A started with one set of g/m/c and then what was at first the c became the m for a new g. It helps because it gives me something for the reader to follow; I just need to make it a bit more intentional.

What worldbuilding idea did you come up with that you would have loved to use but just couldn’t get to work?

I’ve attempted worldbuilding twice -- as it turns out, each time ended up being an H50 Big Bang project.  They seemed to work okay for me, but neither quite lived up to my hopes.  It’s something I’ll continue to work on, though.

What's your character's motivation? What motivates them to act like they do?

All of my current characters are searching for something unidentifiable and intangible at first. They are looking for peace, for purpose; it’s elusive and just out of reach.

100 Days of Writing Day 2

What motivates you to write this specific story? What makes this story special for you? Is there a special twist/trope/setting you want to explore? What got you started on this particular story?

My current H50 WIP is inspired by the idea of Danny as a journalist (hello Prof Jeffries). Yes, it’s been done — but I loved it, so why not more? I wanted to explore a setting opposite of Hawaii. Why not the Pacific Northwest? Because flannel, and sweaters. And a different feel, mood — slower, heavier.

I’m working on an original piece to explore the twist of supernatural; the deliberate choice of the protagonist to embrace what most people would try to be rid of or flee from — the motivation of that choice. The setting is important here, too. It can really only happen somewhere with soft edges.
