oh lestey, dear pal o' mine, i am so glad you asked. i'm super excited about writing this one, i have a LOT of feelings about dean and uh lets just call it the end of his arc bc fuck the show for that lmfao.

also fuck the show for always making it seem like dean hates the idea of growing old because that is utter bullshit!!! i refuse to believe that for one second!! dean winchester has always assumed that he'd die young, that he'd go out in a blaze of glory and youth and probably monster guts. he never thought he'd make it to the gray hair, to the wrinkles, to the achy back and creaky knees stages of life. so growing old is something i firmly believe would excite him, would thrill him.

so in this fic, he DOES make it to those stages, he DOES experience those things, and if and when he's teased about growing old he doesn't scoff or get self-conscious or turn his nose up at it, he fucking revels in it. fucking thanks the person for calling him an old fart, grins like a fool at it!!

but yeah, so far i just have a few little scenes showing this planned out, so like:

- one where dean finds a gray hair (this one is less fleshed out, i dont have many details for what's going to happen here yet).

- one where he's taking note of how he looks in the mirror, noticing how much his face has changed from that baby faced, smooth skinned 20 year old he once was. he touches the skin around his eyes and mouth, taking note of the deep lines and creases that exist there now, and he's looking at them fondly too, like they show the life he's lived- the life he never thought he'd live- and how he's still here, still kicking, and for this scene in particular i was thinking cas could walk in on him squinting at himself in the mirror touching his wrinkles and he thinks that dean is disappointed with what he sees and immediately he tries to fix that by telling him how he thinks he's beautiful and maybe even going on a mini rant about how beauty standards are bullshit and anti aging products are a scam ("how much time have you been spending with sam lately, cas?") but then ofc dean cuts him off and explains how he feels the exact opposite of disappointed and cas is surprised but also pleased to hear it and maybe he touches the crinkles by dean's eyes and smiles softly at him and tells him, with the utmost conviction, that he loves it too.

- and then a scene where dean really registers just how much he can't move the way he once used to be able to. for this one i was thinking set sometime in the future-ish, like maybe sam has a kid (with eileen ofc bc i love her and she deserves better too) and uncle dean is visiting and this kid ADORES uncle dean and is always begging him to play and the kid's favorite game as of late is using dean as a jungle gym and climbing all over him lol, and dean can't say no to the kid, ofc he can't, so he lets the kid do that and even does that thing where he throws the kid in the air and catches them over and over. and eventually the kid runs off to hang out with uncle cas and dean sits down in a lawn chair next to his brother and rubs at his back and goes "man im getting too old for this" and sam laughs and they clink their beer bottles, and maybe they reminisce about their childhoods- the good parts anyways- and maybe there's more reflection about how dean never thought he'd get to be achy like this and sam's just like "well i'm glad you are" implying that he's glad dean's still alive and here with him, with their families, and a deeply content smile settles across dean's face as he looks out and watches cas hoist sam and eileen's kid up onto his shoulders to reach for an apple in a tree or something, and dean's goes "yeah, me too." end scene. end fic. lol

but YEAH. i got a bit rambly there but the fact of the matter is dean deserves to live a long and happy life with his family and his loves ones and he deserves to grow old and go gray and wrinkly and achy and yell at dumb kids from his and cas's matching wicker chairs on their front porch 🥺🥺
