He cares enough about them to feel sick but he hates that feeling and he hates them for it.
He wants to get away from Wilhelm. Let go of the hot pan before it burns him but he can't. He can't bring himself to. He never wants them to leave but it hurts to keep them around. It will hurt worse when they leave on their own
