When Hayner started crushing on Kairi he basically had the mental equivalent of a keysmash
Kairi:*exists* Hayner: ADHDGAKSGAD!!!
Look Hayner can dropkick final bosses but asking a pretty girl out?? That’s HARD!
He tries but stumbles over his words until Kairi asks him out
Hayner loves how adventurous Kairi can be
They definitely get into some fun trouble together
Meanwhile Kairi loves the normalcy of it all
She likes that it’s finally not about saving the world and rescuing people, it’s just about being together and having fun with each other
Hayner feels protective about Kairi but he also knows she could kick his ass if she wanted to
He once threatened someone when he thought they were harassing Kairi
“Dude you will NOT speak this way to MY girlfriend!!”
Kairi was surprised by it tbh. She’s used to Sora and Riku being protective, but at least those two actually have fighting experience!
But look Hayner will threaten you to protect Kairi. But if you hurt Hayner, Kairi will fucking end you
The jerk I mentioned above? Yeah he threw a punch at Hayner
The punch never connected, jerk just felt a sudden pain in his arm and found himself face to face with an oversized key perfect for hitting stuff
Hayner gets loud when he gets angry. Kairi gets quiet and calm, and it’s utterly terrifying (so it’s good that’s almost exclusively for when her friends - or boyfriend - are in danger)
The jerk probably pissed his pants when Kairi informed him there would be consequences if he didn’t leave immediately. Jerk never ran so fast in his entire life
If you thought this would stop Hayner from being protective about Kairi you’re wrong. He still is.
Hayner once yelled “Fight me!” at some random tennis ball lying around, and Kairi responded by throwing it at him
So that’s now a game they play; if one gets annoyed at an inanimate object, they yell “Fight me!” at it and the other one throws it
(They were kinda lowkey about it at first, but gradually got louder so now they yell “FIGHT ME!!” at those objects as loud as they can)
(Tbh Hayner sometimes blushes when they do it while there’s people nearby but god the way Kairi giggles when he does it is SO worth a tiny bit of embarrassment!)
If the thrower hits, they get 3 points, but if the other one catches the object, the catcher gets 3 points
A variant is that one of them pics up something small and calls out “Hey, wanna fight?” before throwing it
In that case, hits are only worth 1 point while catching it means the thrower loses one point
(Not that it matters bc neither of them keep track. If someone asks they make up a random number)
In general there is so. Much. Laughter.
Hayner loves Kairi’s laugh and does his best to find out all the ways to make her laugh
He can be serious if needed, but most of the time, seriousness is not allowed anywhere near those two
Kairi’s had enough of that in her life already tbh. Let her be a kid for God’s sake.
Hayner might not entirely grasp all the things Kairi went through, and there are some things she will probably never tell him, but he has heard the basics
And he’s determined to make the time with him as fun as he can do
