The thing about s1 John Winchester is that he was supposed to be a bad father, that was the point, revenge was always going to wind up ruining their lives. The thing about s14 John Winchester is that he was wish fulfillment, he wasn't real, Dean wanted his dad back but in the same way that he wanted his dad to be his hero again, like when he was a kid and he didn't have to look at him and know he was human and flawed, he was the closure that Dean never had, he wasn't real.
