i feel you on that hope-and-crush cycle tho. most of the games after sh3 are flatter than an old ass soda. tho like I really like the directors behind the new game I'm not rlly sold on the protag (what does it take to get another lady protag in this series jeSUS) or getting a ps4.

I’m one of the rare ones that liked Silent Hill 4, but it wasn’t meant to be a Silent Hill game blah blah technicalities, and 0rigins was kind of okay but then yeah just no.

And seriously, Silent Hill used to be SUCH a female-positive series, Icarus and I had a huge back-and-forth about it.  GIVE US BACK HEATHER GDI.

A brief thesis on Pyramid Head's role in Revelation

There have been a lot of people (understandably) upset about Pyramid Head's actions in Revelation.  I was concerned by it myself, and was going to write it off as another unfortunate byproduct of the utter wreck Gans made of canon (it is, partially), but then I couldn't sleep last night and got thinking...

Okay, so call him Red Pyramid, Pyramid Head, Pyramid Thing, the Red Devil, just don't call him the Bogeyman or I will seriously cut you.  Whatever you know him by, chances are you know him for one thing:

He's the serial rapist dude, right?  All about the mannequin booty and walking sawdust-spewing vagina autopsy scars?

Not so much.  If you didn't know that already, PLAY SILENT HILL 2 FOR THE LOVE OF GOD YOU ARE THE PROBLEM

If you're still too lazy to do that (fuuuuuuck you), in Silent Hill 2, Pyramid Head(s) is(are) a tool(s) unknowingly summoned by James to help strip away the denial surrounding his guilt.  They never assault a living creature, and when James has accepted them, they end their own suffering without further aggression.

However, they are based on Silent Hill lore.  The notes in the underground prison in 2 pin them as executioners (and possible plague-spreaders, but that's a pet theory for another time), and it's assumed that James chose their image based off a painting he saw during his trip to the town with Mary.  In Silent Hill 4, which is of questionable canon but is the only non-2 information we have on Pyramid Head that comes from Team Silent, we learn that their real-life incarnations are acolytes of the Sect of Valtiel.  This gives us a vital connection:

--Valtiel is God's handmaid --Pyramid Head is an acolyte of Valtiel --Heather is Pyramid Head's God Heather doesn't have a guardian in Silent Hill 3, but when she dies in the game, she's dragged off and revived by Valtiel, because God must be reborn.

However, the movie has no Valtiel, and more importantly, no save points.  The motive hasn't changed--God must be reborn, and therefore Heather must be protected, so Pyramid Head steps in to serve his master by protecting the MadonnABLACK

(Arguably, the worst thing Revelation did was allow me way too many opportunities to use this .gif.) This falls apart in the end (I...I just don't know), although you could further project that Claudia is attempting to kill Heather before she can birth God and this is a violation of the necessary ritual, but that's more a problem with Claudia's character than Pyramid Head's. The thing is, I don't know or even really believe that this was the logic behind Pyramid Head's role (it's much more likely Item of Dumb Shit Gans Left for Bassett to Try to Spackle Over #857), but it does make sense.  Pyramid Head is a golem of suffering--he's given a task and will work tirelessly toward it until it's finished, as long as it's willed by the town.

So, putting all other issues aside, I'm going to call Pyramid Head in character for the movie.  Not in place, but in character.  Which, y'know, is a step up from the last one.

I was gonna do a Five Million Words post but y'know what

I'm not gonna change anyone's minds and people are entitled to their own opinions

as far as the mainstream opinions go, it's pretty much a long-suffering tradition in most fandoms at this point to endure people who don't understand shit because they haven't consumed the source material

I didn't like most things most people didn't like (3-D gibbing, really-really-not-Vincent), I liked a few things that most people hated (Pyramid Head's redefinition, Leonard Wolf being straight-up Leonard Wolf), and I loved the things that some people didn't notice (the shoe in the hotel, the rooms and maps being the same, the Session 9 homage, the organic/inorganic themes dovetailing with Heather's original theme of body image).  It wasn't perfection, and it wasn't fantastic, but it wasthe best that could be done, and I don't think a lot of people are giving that credit.  Gans created an utterly broken version of the first game, and Bassett did a credible job spackling a fairly believable AU over it.

It's also worth noting that while it had a pretty solid amount of camp factor, so did the game.  I think a key thing that people who haven't played the original games in a while is that except for 2 (and even it had its moments), Silent Hill has always operated on varying levels of goofy as hell.  Anyone who has ever gotten a UFO ending or fled from pantsless Douglas should know this.

On that note, can I just point out that it was fucking brilliant that Douglas was framed until the end of his appearance so you couldn't tell if he was wearing pants?  It's fucking brilliant.

I'd like to have some low-key discussion about the movie with friends once they've seen it, so hit me up, guys.
