Birds have a third eyelid called the 'nictitating membrane', like this Eurasian magpie here. It sweeps sideways across the eye, cleaning it or protecting it (even mid-flight).

I WAS TODAY YEARS OLD WHEN I LEARNED THAT CAT'S HAVE A THIRD EYELID.

In fact most mammals do? Humans and primates are the odd ones out here, but like, i was not expecting that ok?

i was just messing with my cat's face, and there was a WHOLE ASS SKIN FLAP in his eye and i had a panic about it
