Film after film: Looking for Horses (dir. Stefan Pavlovic, 2021)

Another great entry from the "This Human World" festival, Pavlovic's film is structured around the encounter between the filmmaker and a fisherman, who is also a war veteran. I was also taken by the digressions, the ones that dig deeper into the filmmaker's past. The testimony about the war coming late in the film is particularly moving.

Film after film: ¿Qué hago en este mundo tan visual (What I’m doing in this visual world? dir. Manuel Embalse, 2020)

It's a formally captivating film about seeing while not seeing, about operating as a visual artist in "this visual world" while being visually impaired. You never know where it will take you, and it's always super interesting.

Film after film: Radiograph of a Family (dir. Firouzeh Khosrovani, 2020)

This film presents a family story that develops against the background of crucial historical and socio-political events. It is told from an intimate and original perspective of an insider and outsider at the same time, a witness emotionally involved in the lives of the film’s protagonists. Without being overly didactic, it reflects on different, sometimes paradoxical and sometimes clashing, meanings of freedom in relation to the filmmaker's family family, which gives her film the narrative complexity, both intimate and political. The film proposes an idiosyncratic format to the genre of an autobiographical documentary; it employs various artistic and narrative strategies of working with an archive of photographs and home movies, thereby providing an argument for the indisputable power that images have in shaping one’s memories.

Das diesjährige Festivalsujet ist eine Arbeit des syrischen Künstlers Ayham Jabr und Teil seiner Series Damascus under Siege. My main field of work is video editing for TV Series and films; I also do graphic design, photography and digital and analog collages. My life during the war these six years is fortunately still better than a lot of Syrians who lived and still live in the dark side of it and have interesting stories that everyone should know about. I don't want speak for my self or for any one else I don't think I have the right and I hope my work will say more and better for my self. - AYHAM JABR ist Künstler in Damaskus.
