What's America the best place I know is Massachusetts
The Hidden World gets ten times funnier if you allow the characters to break fourth wall.
I hate that movie but hear me out. Characters must follow the script yes but the script is nonsense and they can't help themselves but make it known. In every. Single. Scene.
Every character is a real character (actor, if character reenacted their own story) except Light Fury, she's an animatronic.
That moment when she pushes Hiccup off of Toothless and everyone is laughing? They're laughing because this is the 30th take since Toothless always dodges her or dives down to catch Hiccup and Hiccup had been trying to ingrain in his head that I'll be okay, it's just a stunt Toothless, c'mon just this one time and we won't have to shoot this scene and get rid of it. But he doesn't listen. The Berkians are amused because they're already filled to the brim with the ridiculousness of the scene and Toothless' unwillingness to comply.
Toothless acting ooc, well the real Toothless is taking no bullshit and not following the script no matter how hard they try so they had to get a stunt double. The older takes which didn't make into the final copy are all actual Toothless and he's NOT following the story. Wearing the autotail makes him uncomfortable, he cannot muster up an excited expression. Ignoring Hiccup when he's in danger goes against his instincts.
Grimmel trying to pressurize Hiccup with night fury extinction? Multiple takes done because Hiccup keeps holding in snickers or interrupting him to invalidate his knowledge or sassing at him.
Snotlout being heard offscreen: "Who even wrote this thing? Terrible storytelling, I should've written it."
Ruffnut leading Grimmel on a goose chase cuz she knew she was being followed which actually validates Tuffnut's words of whoever captured her being the one suffering because they planned this.
Hiccup groaning in frustration and sighing before doing a scene.
Tuffnut offscreen when the pass over Hidden World: "The earth is round!"
The actual Toothless who got dismissed from acting cuz he refused to follow the script chilling off set and giving Hiccup looks when the later is trying to act a scene and Hiccup cannot focus like that because it's the same thing when you're giving a class presentation and your best friend keeps staring into your eyes and sending you inside jokes through your brains' Bluetooth connection.
The twins interrupt the shooting constantly to ask for clarifications because the script either goes against their experiences or they start rambling ideas, or correcting their own dialogues and actions.
Fishlegs providing a solution regarding death grippers within the first encounter because he read about them a lot.
Hiccup sneaking on the set to remove the death gripper's collars only to break them and realize that oops, these were props
Astrid sneaking in very politely and happily spoken sarcastic comments regarding the story in her scenes. It takes a moment to comprehend what she had said cuz her words don't match her acting mannerisms.
Snotlout with a red marker in his hand throughout the shooting crossing out and making corrections on his copy of the script, in full director/author mode.
Valka subconsciously rubbing off her makeup because itchy, stuffy, need off.
The only way to make the dragons take off for that last scene's shooting is bribing them with extra dinner they placed somewhere in that direction.
Basically, the story wasn't actually part of their life, they just gotta shoot that movie cuz contracts and cash grabs and what not.
Bloopers include bullying Grimmel nonstop and the gang being silly together.
I have a lot of gripes with THW, but I think the thing that bothers me the most is the destruction of Berk.
You have this village that survived a war with the dragons for 300 years, and every time, they picked themselves up and build anew. The Great Hall and the Haddock home were full of memories and history. The Shields on the walls of the Chieftains of the past. The Statue of Stoick, the training academy...
And it was all gone.
We already had a great loss in Toothless and the dragons leaving at the end, but losing all of Berk was such overkill. Like, even if Grimmel had burnt it to the ground, if the gang had stayed and rebuilt again, I think that would have been so powerful.
But they gave up Berk for the dragons...and then they gave up the dragons.
Overkill, I tell ya. Overkill.
I find it super unfortunate that the HTTYD team had this super amazing concept in their pockets like THE NIGHT FURY, and it became such a great mystery that they really didn’t know what to do with at the end… there was just so much mystery and wonder about this species that was superior to any other and had massive intelligence and agility and everything! And Toothless being the only one they ever encountered and we never find out an actual compelling reason. Or maybe that WAS the point: to NEVER KNOW, to keep them a mystery and that would keep it interesting. Maybe we should’ve never known… Maybe there was so much more to the Night Furies, maybe they come from another completely different continent or smth…
But NOPE, they went for the cheapest most boring ass answer: “oh yeah btw all night furies were actually killed by this one random dude who’s such a non character, but look how badass he is! he wont tell us how he did it and his reason is a last ditch effort to connect him to the MC except it doesn’t. Also apparently he’s super famous and that creates a huge retcon in the entire franchise! Oh and don’t ask why the Night Furies don’t live on the Hidden World, a safe heaven for all dragons no human has ever touched because we DONT have an answer!”
Like??? Way to take an amazing concept and make it so bland and unemotional. I’d rather not have an answer to where are all the Night Furies than that garbage…Toothless and the Night Furies deserved better than to have that punkass bitch as their main “villain”💀💀💀
I was so mad he dared called himself the “Night Fury killer” bitch? Trying to be such hardcore wannabe he legit ruined the entire franchise lmfaooo 😭😭
My opinion on every Toothless design
HTTYD 1/GotNF: Absolute perfection. A beautiful harmony of cute and dangerous.
RoB/DoB/RttE: Not too different from his OG design, but his eyes look a bit off (they seem to be somewhat smaller).
HTTYD 2: He's not great, but he's tolerable.
THW: The wolf to pug evolution in the span of 1 year. I hate it. He looks awful.
However, as bad as THW Toothless is, he's nothing compared to:
Live Action: The unholy offspring of bad design and CGI itself. Sir, wtf are those wings? Ugliest dragon I've seen.
HTTYD 1, 2, and 3 comparison.
RoB/DoB/RttE.
OG compared to live action.
let’s talk about the hidden world
not the entire movie, because it would take forever to point out every problem in that monstrosity, but just the concept of the hidden world itself. there are many inconsistencies but i’ve narrowed it down to a few points.
1. it introduces some sort of “magic” into the httyd universe
let me be clear, there has never been any sort of “magic” in the httyd universe. dragons are not these mystical, magical creatures that httyd 3 makes them out to be, they are just normal animals. they think of dragons how we would think of lions or bears.
this is the issue with the writers suddenly trying to bring the books into the picture after completely ignoring them for a decade. they tried to incorporate the books into the third movie, but at this point, the books and the movies are so vastly different that they take place in completely different universes with completely different rules and completely different worldbuilding. the book universe has some elements of magic in it, the movie universe doesn’t, so the idea of a hidden world at the end of the earth where all dragons come from might have fit if it was included in the book universe (which it wasn’t even), but it just makes no sense in the movie universe, so them basing the whole ending of the movie and the whole concept of the hidden world on nothing but the prologue of the first book (yes i’m convinced that that’s the only part of the books they actually looked at) is so stupid and caused the writers to have to destroy everyone’s character to even make that ending work (which it still doesn’t).
2. the earth is flat now???
they have been making flat earther jokes throughout the entire franchise, it’s a running bit and it’s funny every time. but it’s not funny anymore if that’s what actually happens. the whole joke is that even these smart people think the earth is flat because they’re vikings, but if they’re right then it’s not even a joke anymore.
the movie httyd universe has always been just our normal universe but with dragons, but with them suddenly making the earth flat and adding in the hidden world, that completely changes everything we know about this universe up to this point.
3. stoick knows about the hidden world
stoick says in one of the flashback scenes that someday he wants to find the hidden world and “seal it up” to stop the fighting, and it even pretty much says that that was his mission the entire time. but, we know that that’s not true because he directly says what his mission is in the first movie, which was to “find the nest and destroy it” so the dragons will “find a new home” and stop bothering them. he’s not talking about the hidden world, he’s talking about the specific nest that the dragons that have been attacking them are coming from. he doesn’t know where the dragons come from and he doesn’t care where the dragons come from, he just wants them out of his face. he doesn’t see the dragons as the creatures that they are, he still just sees them as monstrous beasts that need to be killed for the protection of his village. he never cared about peace because he never thought peace was an option. if he did then the first movie would’ve have happened because he would have listened to hiccup in the first place. hiccup (and valka, but more on that later) is the only one who believed that peace was possible because he’s the only one who was able to see the dragons for what they really were. that’s literally the whole point, that everyone looked down on hiccup because of his differences when those differences are the reason he was the only one who could finally stop the war.
him being so different from valka is important, too. a lot of people overlook that and act like he’s exactly like her and the exact opposite of stoick when it’s much more complex than that (see my valka defense post). people blame valka for leaving but if you think about it you see that even if she stayed she would not have been able to do what hiccup did. she didn’t create peace with the dragons, she became one of them. hiccup was the only one who thought that humans and dragons really could coexist. httyd 3 makes it look like stoick thought that stopping the fighting was possible, when hiccup (not even valka) was actually the only one with that mindset at that point.
the fact that hiccup is so different from both his parents and yet so similar is a crucial detail in not only the plot but also his character in general, and the fact that they changed stoick’s mindset and tried to gaslight us into thinking that that’s how he was the whole time is crazy.
4. they find the hidden world almost immediately after they start looking for it
hiccup and astrid literally find it by accident while looking for toothless. they and the gang have been exploring very far outside of the archipelago for the entirety of race to the edge and they never even found valka’s sanctuary. valka has been out there for 20 years and she never found it. stoick suddenly has been searching for this thing his entire life and he hasn’t found it. and they find it just like that? boring. yawning. sloppy. lazy. they clearly couldn’t think of a more interesting way for them to have found it so they just decided to take the easy way out. idk how long it takes for them find it from the time that they leave berk, but it’s fast. way too fast.
petition to draw them more in their dragon armour??
