hi, someone who adores your sculpting work here- i saw your sculpture of coa and i was just stunned immediately.

do you have any examples or explanations as to how your process goes? i'm very curious about how things are built up and have honestly wanted to potentially look at sculpting a little bit myself :] your stuff is stunning <3

Ah, thank you! Glad my work pleases. This is rather a lot of info, so take from it what you will -

It really depends on the size and complexity of what you're sculpting. For really little things (below a few centimeters in depth/width) you can just shape them out of the clay and let them dry like that before firing them. Once you get past that you have to hollow them (pieces like that slugcat I did- it was small enough to not need an armature for support). When that happens, I finish it as is, then cut it open and scoop out a lot of clay on the inside before closing it up again. The sculpting process can be anywhere from a few days to several months to be completed, depending on the size and complexity of the piece.

I also let larger sculptures dry out for an extended period, rather than just taking off the plastic covering all at once- that can make them crack, even if they're already "leather-hard". Once I feel like it's done (I say this as if it's easy- I always have to force myself to walk away from a piece), I'll start covering it loosely and allow myself to do a few more refinements here and there as it dries out fully.

For larger pieces, like this Coa and the bust I did before, I start with a simple armature- in this case, a bit of plywood with a rod stuck through it vertically with some support- and wrap that tightly with a bit of newspaper bound with scotch tape or twine. That'll fill out a lot of the space inside, and make hollowing much easier later. From there I just build up the clay around the outside of that. Once the sculpture's done, I do any hollowing I have to- for this one, it was just a bit inside the head/behind the hair- then just lift it off the armature and let it dry. Once you fire it in a kiln, the newspaper will just burn away harmlessly.

(Some people like to build stuff up with coils of clay, like with pottery, but I don't like that much- it's just not as stable and you get far less control in my experience. I prefer to just hollow it afterwards if I have to.)

So, that's my general process. This is only for water-based clay, of course, which is 95% of what I use- sometimes I'll add on details and stuff later using Apoxie (a two-part epoxy sculpting blend good for when you want to make a small detail that won't work well in water-based clay), and different clay bodies like that behave quite differently. But that's another topic.

Fun Facts about Pelle’s Chidhood

Pelle had exceptionally curly hair as a young child, his curls loosened into waves as he got older. 

Pelle’s childhood best friends were Talwinne Yevys and Brila Din

Pelle grew up in the same tent/aravel with Deshanna and Aela up until he was twelve years old, he then moved to stay in the same tent/aravel as his cousin Faolan.

Pelle and Aela used to sleep in the same bedroll as children.This stopped in their adolescence because Deshanna thought it might be inappropriate for them to do this once Aela hit puberty. 

Pelle often walked around in Deshanna’s shawls as a child and wore them like blankets

Pelle has been studying Natural Lore since he was seven years old.

His first lesson was to memorize the rhyme Pain and Bane. 

In the earliest years of his life, Pelle’s eyes were actually brown. They turned the amber color they are currently when he was six years old, the same year he was actually able to manifest his magic enough to cast real spells. 

Pelle carried a staff made from a tree branch found the morning after a thunderstorm. He still has it. 

Deshanna loved putting halla flower crowns on Pelle’s head when he was young. 

Pelle’s clothes were constantly too big up until he was almost sixteen years old. 

The halla charm he wears around his neck as an adult was given to him as a late birthday gift/good luck charm for his vallaslin ritual.

Pelle was taught how to drive how to drive an aravel by Edran when he was fourteen years old. “Passing By” was a huge help to him in remembering the steps in order.

He often sang it to himself under his breath while trying to remember the process. 

Pelle loved to sing as a child

Pelle and Talwinne were big on believing in cranky old crusty elvhen ghosts.

They were so adamant on meeting one someday to see if ghosts were really as angry as they always were in the stories. 

Pelle has been fascinated with the stars since a very young age.

He used to sit by the halla at night and stargaze. 

Yes, he talked to the halla and asked them what they saw in the sky. 

Pelle had a pet Fennec for a few months. 

He only lost it when he clan moved and it ran off spontaneously and he couldn’t go back and fetch it. Faolan made sure he didn’t run off on his own.

When Faolan found out why he was trying to veer from the path he helped Pelle catch a new pet.

They ended up with a frog that Pelle never took home, he just visited it every morning. 

It’s name was “Mr. Moss”

Pelle and Fen did not get along at first, mostly because Fen was a very forward and affectionate and Pelle was all about stranger danger. 

He grew on Pelle eventually and they became best friends within a month or so. 

Lara loves Pelle like a little brother and she often gave him books from outside the clan as presents to him. 

He definitely has Lara to thank that he knows anything about the Chantry--as well as an introduction to fiction.

Pelle’s first crush was actually Brila, but it was just puppy love. 

He gave her a kiss for her birthday when he was 10, they claimed they were in love for about a week before they both got over it.

No shopping challenge week five

Things bought: food, cotton shopping bags, bamboo make up removal pads, collagen supplement, magnesium supplement, writing course, gift for my mum’s birthday

In terms of not shopping, this week was a fail. But I have a rationale for every purchase and don’t consider any of it frivolous.

The writing course is an experience not an object and so, arguably, is exempt. The gift is allowed. The pads and magnesium supplement were replacement items. The collagen is because I’m having extreme tendon pain in my hand and I need to try something (technically it’s a supplement so it’s good, I guess). It’s only the bags which I didn’t need to get. But they will help me to reduce my plastic waste so I really can’t be mad about it.
