one thing about Hex that is so important to me is how she's not forced to change and "become better". I think of that short story in one of the books where she puts on a pink dress in an attempt to appear more approachable, but instead that only puts the others off even further. That story may not be that deep but I have been using it to build my own interpretation of her for years.

She doesn't suddenly have to turn into an outgoing bundle of joy to be accepted. She can be reserved and she can be sombre and that doesn't make her a bad person who should be avoided and written off as "depressed and unwilling to change". The whole point of her story is to not judge a book by its cover and that someone doesn't have to look like what you consider happy and stable to prove that they're in a better place.
