FLASHBACK - JUNE 15TH 2015
The sun burned hot against your skin, but you didn’t mind it. It was what summer was supposed to feel like, the buzzing of bees as they pollinate the flowers, the sounds of ice cream trucks driving by the neighbourhood more frequently, and specifically, the sound of the laughter you always shared around him. Around Seonghyeon.
You don’t remember how you two became best friends, and maybe that’s the special part about it. Maybe there was never supposed to be any real reason for you two meeting. Maybe it was fate. All you were certain of though, that he made you smile the brightest, even on your most gloomiest of days.
One warm summer night, you sat on a small squeaky swing in the nearby park in your neighbourhood, on the other swing, Seonghyeon was swinging back and fourth, not really focusing on anything else besides trying to increase the speed of the swing. He clearly lived for the thrill.
“Hyeonie?” The familiar nickname slips so easily from your mouth, and he finally slows down the swing to focus on you, his eyes met yours, and you let out a small sigh before continuing.
“Do you really think we can be idols?” You speak, a bit nervously. It’s something you and Seonghyeon always talked about, how amazing it would be to be a singer instead of having to go to school and work for the rest of your life, the idol life sounded so much more appealing.
“I don’t know..” he mumbled and looked away. “I hope so.. but I’m not going anywhere without you, if I become an idol, you’re coming with me.” He turns to you, and flashes a bright smile toward you. Your heart feels warm, it’s no surprise you’ve grown fond of Seonghyeon, both sets of parents teased you about it all the time.
“Promise me.. promise me that we’ll do it together.” you finally manage to speak. Seonghyeon nods firmly, silently releasing his hold on one of the swing chains before holding out his pinky toward you.
“I pinky swear, wherever I’ll go, you’ll be there too. I won’t do this without you.” He reassured firmly. You smile before reaching forward, interlocking your pinky’s together in a silent vow. Maybe things were going to work out after all.
PRESENT TIME - FEBRUARY 24TH 2025
“Y/n!!” You were snapped out of your thoughts instantly as a voice called your name, you look up. Oh. It’s just your makeup artist. She smiles sweetly at you.
“It’s okay to be nervous for your debut.. I know I would.” She continued gently applying makeup to your face. Yeah, nervous was kind of an understatement right now. This is something you’d been working on for months.. and it was finally going to be displayed for the whole world.
“What if it doesn’t work out?” You ask nervously, gaze slowly flickering to your reflection in the mirror. Your makeup artists pauses her work and sighs, standing up straight behind your chair and looking at you both in the mirror.
“It’s going to be okay y/n, you deserve to be on that stage more than anybody. You have all worked so hard for this, it’s time to enjoy it.” She smiles, before going back to her work. Yeah. I should enjoy it. It’s all I ever wanted after all, but I can’t shake away the lingering feeling that, something, or someone is missing.
Once I’m finally done with my makeup I walk over to Ian, who’s busy talking with our manager about something. The other girls were either getting their makeup or hair done, so I just silently stood by, having nothing to do.
“Y/n, are you okay?” Our manager spoke, i immediately nodded, replying with a fast ‘yes’ before pretending to busy myself with straightening out my clothes. Ian seemed to sense my unease, she quietly excused herself from our manager before gently pulling me off into a quiet corner.
“Something’s clearly up with you, you’ve never been this.. shaky before.” She sighs, her voice clearly laced with concern.
“I’m fine, seriously, it’s just.. nerves. This is a pretty big moment for us.” I try to calm her with my lame excuse, and she seemed to buy it, she smiled and embraced me tightly,
“It’ll be okay, we’ll do great out there.” I didn’t respond, just silently tightened my hold on her as i nodded into her shoulder.
“Yeah.. we will.” I reply quietly.
The buzz in our ears after our debut show was still there when we were back at our dorms. All the girls were tired yet extremely happy with our show. I still felt a lingering feeling of sadness, I couldn’t stop thinking about someone who i knew years ago, no idea where he was or if he even remembered I existed.
I laid awake in my bed.. the others sound asleep. My head wouldn’t quiet down, it continued spiralling with thoughts, “what if’s” and things that led me up to this very moment. I should be fulfilled like the other girls, but that happiness couldn’t quite reach my heart.
These thoughts continued plaguing my mind for weeks after our debut show, which I couldn’t help. Every time I closed my eyes it was as if I was met with his face staring back at me, and everytime I’d try to reach for it, he’d slip past my fingertips. I thought I was going crazy for months.
But then, as the beginning of fall came about, life was starting to look up again, me and my group had been doing great, we enjoyed our jobs extremely, getting to spend time with each other and just having that support from others was refreshing, I thought finally.. finally I didn’t have to think about him again.
One week into August, I walk into practice like normal, when I see the girls crowded around in a circle, all seemingly talking excitedly, what was this about? I began to approach and see they’re all looking at something on Yuha’s phone.
“What’s that?” I spoke up, their attention moved from the phone to look at me, before anyone answered Juun grabbed my wrist and pulled me closer to see what was going on.
“Look!! A new boy group is debuting soon!” Carmen spoke excitedly, really? I look down at the phone and read the article they found, a new five member boy group under HYBE, well that seemed interesting.
“Have they announced the members yet?” I look up at them, Stella nodded enthusiastically and showed me something on her own phone, photos, seemingly taken by paparazzi. Five blurry photos of five individual guys, all of them wearing face masks to cover themselves.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, until Stella swiped to another photo, a brunette guy with his head hung low, but my eyes couldn’t fool me, the way he carried himself, the small sliver of his eyes that I could see.. that was..
“Him..” I shakily point a finger to the photo of the fifth guy. “Who’s he?” My gaze looks across the room, some of the girls delivering a clueless expression and shrugging their shoulders, until Jiwoo spoke up.
“I think.. his name starts with an S? Seong.. something.” My heart was racing faster than ever, could it really be? After all this time? I took a shaky intake of air before breathing out slowly.
“Seonghyeon?” My voice was quiet, nervous, unsure if I should trust what I’m hearing and seeing. As I said that, Jiwoo snapped her fingers and nodded.
“Right! That’s his name.” She confirmed, “Seongyeon..” she repeats the name, as if thinking about something. “I think he’s your age.” She confirmed my suspicions.
All the noise around me seemed to deafen. All I could hear was the sound of my heart racing and my own heavy breathing. I even felt my eyes sting, I blinked rapidly, I felt the moisture of tears falling down my cheeks.
In an instant, the girls immediately hurried closer, their voices mixed together, filled with panic and confusion. I couldn’t form any words until Ian grabbed my face in her warm hands.
“Y/n? Are you okay?” her soothing voice hit my heart immediately, and I just mechanically nodded at her words before finally finding my voice, a solemn smile on my face as I wiped my tears with my sleeves.
“Yeah. Just fine.”
(I apologise in advance if this seems rushed </3)
