Vent About Thin Privilege & the Holidays With Us!
“Oh, Cousin looks soooo good, she’s lost so much weight!”
“Are you sure you want to eat that?”
“Do you think you need that extra spoonful of mashed potatoes?”
“I’m going to have to starve allll weekend to make up for today.”
“Isn’t Niece so wonderfully slender? She must have gotten it from my side of the family. You, on the other hand, definitely got your build from your father’s side!”
We’ve heard them all before, haven’t we? The blatant praising of thin relatives. The food shaming. The blatant and subtle silence about our (fat) appearance when all the thin relatives are being praised. The genetic comparisons and tut-tutting over how “lucky” the thin relatives are. The self-flogging for enjoying a simple family meal. The requests, bribes, and threats to “convince” us to start losing weight and stop being such “embarrassments” to the family. Suggesting we’re bad parents for remaining fat and that our children “deserve” thin parents. Leaving us out of the big family photo, or stuffing us in the back and putting the thin relatives up front. Only asking about the lives of thin relatives and ignoring or outright mocking the fatter relatives. Making assumptions about what we eat or how we live.
Well, this holiday season, you’re not alone. You’ve got a wonderful community of supportive fat folks who want to hear your story. It doesn’t have to be something huge. It can be little annoyance and subtle digs. But we would like to give you a voice and some supportive comments to help you get through what can be difficult events for many fat folks.
Please send us your holiday stories of fat discrimination and thin privilege. We’ll tag and link the stories to our “Events and Community” page, so mention that you’re submitting to the event.
Happy holidays, readers! We’re here for you.
