Enjolras is an MP and Grantaire presents a silly, vaguely satirical comedy programme. Enjolras takes some bait too well and wants to fight back.
'...six years on from that first meeting, Grantaire made a living by poking fun at politicians and, more often than was necessary, Enjolras. It was the same as when they were friends. He was trying to get his attention, whilst secure in the knowledge that Enjolras would never give him the type of attention he wanted. But things had backfired. He was here.'
Grantaire stood up immediately, letting his script and drink fall to the floor.
‘Where is he? Sorry - I’ll clean that up. Where is he?’
‘Makeup.’
‘Right. Okay. Right. Yeah.’
Grantaire paused. He had no idea what to do now. His whole morning had been spent dwelling on Enjolras’ imminent arrival. Now he was actually here. What the fuck next?
‘Do you want me to walk over there with you?’
Abigail had witnessed Grantaire in many undignified states. This one was new. Drunk - yes. Angry - yes. Miserable - yes. But flustered? Grantaire was many things, but he was never flustered. He was not a man who was ever short for words. And yet - here he stood, like a lost puppy, desperately trying to find something to say, to think of a way to respond to the news that Enjolras was in the building.
‘Do you think I should go over?’ he asked, finally.
‘Do you want to go over?’
This floored him.
No - of course he didn’t want to go over. A thousand times, no. But also - yes. God yes. More than anything.
It had been years since they last spoke. Things hadn’t ended badly or well, they had just ended, as things often do when a group of friends leaves university and drifts apart.
Enjolras and Grantaire had met in their first year. Grantaire enrolled on a module called ‘Contemporary Socialism’ so he could fuck about with his friend Jehan. As they’d taken their seats on the first day of this class, Jehan introduced Grantaire to his friend Enjolras. He was tall, blonde and inconceivably handsome, but it was not until fifteen minutes later when Enjolras answered a question that Grantaire fell swiftly and stupidly in love. He had known on that morning as strongly as he knew now that his doomed heart would venerate Enjolras until the day it stopped beating.
He was going to change the world. That much was obvious. He was passionate, intelligent and captivating. He was well read, he was charming, he was beautiful, he believed in change, in people, when Grantaire decidedly did not. We’re attracted to what we lack.
They moved into the same circle of friends and saw more of each other. Grantaire coped with his nerves by drinking, Enjolras coped with his irritation by criticising. Most of their conversations were disagreements. Enjolras was increasingly frustrated by Graintaire’s cynicism and failure to be serious, Grantaire was increasing bored of Enjolras’ apparent lack of emotion and ability to have fun.

Grantaire swallowed and shook his head. If he was going, he was going alone.

Enjolras glanced at Louis in the mirror. ‘You look more nervous than me,’ he said, in what he hoped was a comforting tone.
Louis stopped chewing his nails. ‘How nervous are you?’
Enjolras - a true politician, despite his constant criticism of modern politics and all its rules and tropes - expertly avoided this question.
‘What time does this go out?’ He asked, inspecting his sleeves.
‘Ten,’ answered Grantaire from the doorway. ‘So you can swear your tits off.’
‘Hello Grantaire,’ Enjolras said, badly hiding a smile.
‘Alright Apollo. How’s it dangling on the front line of socialist revolution these days?’
Louis snorted loudly. Enjolras spun round and silenced him, using only his eyebrows. Grantaire beamed, incredibly pleased with himself.
He had remembered the second he entered the room that talking to Enjolras was - though much dreaded and dwelled upon - his favourite thing. His fear was gone. Everything was going to be okay. Of course it was, Enjolras was here.
Enjolras was here, CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGED to answer Grantaire’s questions. This was going to be fucking amazing.
‘Are you going to introduce me?’ Grantaire asked, nodding towards Louis, who was still laughing a little bit.
‘Forgive me,’ Enjolras said, stiffly. ‘This is Louis, my special adviser.’
Grantaire shook Louis’ hand. ‘Charmed. Grantaire, but my friends call me R.’
‘What shall I call you?’
‘Whatever you want,’ Grantaire answered with a wink. Enjolras rolled his eyes.
Grantaire dropped into the chair next to Louis. ‘So what special tasks do you perform as a special adviser?’
Louis laughed nervously. Grantaire was in full, swaggering, media personality flirt mode. ‘Largely try to control Enjolras.’
Grantaire laughed. ‘Blimey. You’re a braver man than I.’ He looked at Enjolras, who was concentrating very hard on the filming schedule stuck to the wall. ‘I wouldn’t even try.’
Enjolras met Grantaire’s gaze and for a moment they both tried to read the other’s mind.
‘So you two were at uni together?’
Grantaire was the first to look away. ‘Yes. We were student activists.’
It was Enjolras’ turn to snort, now. ‘In a very loose sense,’ he added. ‘Grantaire was certainly there a lot, but I don’t know how much he cared.’
‘Not at all - as I’m sure you guessed.’
Louis had not predicted, in his many anxiety dreams about this interview, that he would end up being suffocated by sexual tension.
